The 'Unofficial' Women and Children's Project

The 'Unofficial' Women and Children's Project MEENA (Formally the UWCC)

A community interest company set up in the UK to carry on the work started in Calais. Www.welcomecinema.org.

Many women and children (and single male carers) have ‘made’ it over to the UK and the Women and Children Center recognized the need to follow up the experience of these individuals, and ensure they continue being supported through this process.

“The story doesn’t end when you make it to the UK”
Through our work in Calais we have numerous contacts with individuals now claiming asylum in the UK,

many of these people we class as our friends. This gives us a unique insight and access to the processes and experiences they go through. The aim of Meena is to simply identify any issues and offer support and find solutions for the best possible outcomes. We can achieve this by responding immediately to someone’s practical needs, signposting asylum seekers/refugees to the local support networks including advocacy and professional legal advice, as well as much needed emotional and psychological support. We aim to work in partnership with all organisations offering support to asylum seekers and refugees through collaboration we believe there is strength to achieve the best outcomes possible. EVENT DETAILS:

MEENA is based in the west midlands and has secured funding to set up a centre to continue our work with Women and Children asylum seekers and refugees. MEENA works directly with many expert organisations. The centre will offer a safe space and enable Women and Children a place to access support and information. We are doing outreach work to connect and support young people and make sure they are accessing the services that are available to them. We will be running workshops to support integration, independent living skills, understanding ‘rights’, along with activities to enhance quality of life. We are working in Partnership with Birmingham University to provide front line Social and Support workers a ‘master class’ on supporting the Women and Children they work with. In London we are involved in ‘The Welcome Cinema’ a monthly event inviting refugees, asylum seekers and UK citizens to come together over a shared passion for food and film. We continue to work with both HelpRefugees ( http://www.helprefugees.org.uk/ ) and Safepassage (http://safepassage.org.uk/ )
We are also continuing to monitor the situation for Women and children in France and identify and respond to issues. Throughout our work we are documenting the experiences of Women and children and feeding into research with the hope of addressing some of the long term issues. WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES
We make every attempt to keep our costs down so the bulk of the money goes direct to Women and Children

Our Story

Sadly our lovely building had to close as the roof was too damaged... we continue to support Refugee and asylum seekers, and are working toward creating a team of volunteers to provide welcome spaces and activities in Initial Accommodations in the West Midlands.
