UNISON police staff members in England and Wales are being consulted over a proposed pay claim for 2025.

Police branches will be consulting members over the next few weeks and submitting members’ views by 15 March.

Members should speak with their branch if they have any questions.

Campaign for a Police Staff Long Service and Good Conduct Medal

Work has been going on since 2021 in campaigning to establish the long service and good conduct medal for all Police Staff. The issue has been raised through the Police Staff Council and most recently discussed with the employers on 17th January 2025. The Home Office has agreed to draft a paper for consideration of ministers. Minutes of the PSC 24th October 2024 recorded the below action:

Long Service Award for Police Staff.

The Employers’ Side Secretariat updated members on the Long Service Award proposal. It was noted this had gone into abeyance due to the General Election but that the Home Office was planning on a draft proposal to the PSC for consideration. If agreed this would be submitted to the Committee of Honours and Decorations.

Members will be update on the progress of the campaign.

Information about the campaign

Currently there is no long service and good conduct medal for police staff, which compares to the one awarded to police officers following 20 years of meritorious service. This is something that UNISON believes should be rectified.

It should be noted that as well as police officers, fire, ambulance, probation and prison service personnel are all able to qualify for similar medals.

It is high time that changed, and if we don’t initiate this work, who will?
