Green Party-Led Lewisham council passed what is believed to be the UK’s first motion committing a council to systematically refuse support for Home Office immigration raids.

The motion commits Lewisham council

“To conduct a comprehensive review into Council systems and processes with the aim of refusing to assist the Home Office or Immigration Enforcement teams during raids – including via police cooperation”.

Lewisham Mayor Liam Shrivastava said:

“I’m incredibly proud that Lewisham Council has made this historic decision to defend our migrant workers against the hostile environment.

“Immigration raids do not build safety in our communities, they spread fear and make it even harder for victims of modern slavery and trafficking to come forward and seek protection. Lewisham is now a true Borough of Sanctuary, in name and in practice.”

Jamaica is not asking Britain for an immediate payout.

On September 6, Jamaica is expected to formally petition King Charles III to refer key legal questions on slavery reparations to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.

The petition seeks legal clarity on whether the enslavement of Africans in Jamaica was unlawful, whether it amounted to crimes against humanity under international law, and whether the UK has a legal obligation to provide a remedy for its continuing consequences.

The move has the backing of CARICOM, and supporters believe a favorable ruling could strengthen reparations efforts across the Caribbean, although it would not automatically determine other countries' claims.

What are your thoughts? Is this the right legal approach?
