Someone can be smiling, working, caring for others and still finding things difficult. Another person may need quiet, space or support that is not immediately visible.

We do not need to diagnose someone’s experience to respond with compassion.

Small changes in language can help make honest conversations feel safer.

Trust often begins with knowing that your story will be treated with respect.

For someone considering counselling, clear information about confidentiality can reduce uncertainty and make the first step feel safer. It tells them that privacy is taken seriously, that boundaries are explained and that they have the right to ask questions before deciding what to share.

At Change, creating that sense of safety depends on careful professional practice and the commitment of the people behind the service, counsellors, volunteers, trustees, partners and supporters.

Help us make trustworthy psychological support easier to understand and access across Birmingham. Follow and share our work.

Will anyone know that I am having counselling?

Worrying about privacy can make asking for help feel even harder.

Counselling is confidential, which means what you share is treated with care and is not casually discussed with other people.

Before counselling begins, your counsellor should explain confidentiality clearly, including the limited circumstances in which information may need to be shared, for example, when there is a serious concern about safety or when disclosure is required by law.

You can ask questions at any point.

Understanding how your information is handled is part of feeling safe and making an informed choice about counselling.

“What if I don’t know what to say?” is one of the most common worries people have about starting counselling.

At Change, people do not need to arrive with a polished explanation or a clear plan. A first conversation can begin with uncertainty. The counsellor’s role is to listen, understand what matters to the person and help them explore what they would like to be different.

Making that first step feel human and manageable is part of widening access to psychological support across Birmingham — and it is work strengthened by our counsellors, volunteers, trustees, partners and supporters.
Help us reassure more people that they do not need perfect words to begin. Follow or share Change’s work.
