Martineau Gardens

Martineau Gardens A beautiful community garden. An oasis for wildlife, a haven of tranquillity or simply a great destination to visit

Martineau Gardens is a place where people, plants and wildlife meet. Our mission is to inspire people about the natural environment. We also provide volunteering opportunities in the garden and are a venue for educational activities and courses. You can visit Martineau Gardens every day except Sunday (and Bank Holidays) between 10am and 4pm, we're free to enter (except for some special events). Ma

rtineau Gardens is the registered charity that manages the gardens and wildlife area. We are a Community Garden, a Social Enterprise and a Visitor Attraction. Our beautiful community garden is two and a half acres in size, organically managed and you'll find lots to see within this modest space. An orchard, food growing beds, a hot house, wildflower meadow, a wildlife area (with SLINC status), woodland, meandering paths, a bird hide, a children's play area, picnic space and more. We can make you hot or cold drinks for which donations are welcomed (served from the Pavilion). You can pick up a plant or two, buy fresh seasonal produce, local honey, preserves, chutneys, chopped logs and compost. We have many regular volunteers who contribute so much to the gardens. We also have corporate volunteers from local businesses. Our members elect Trustees at the Annual General Meeting to take overall responsibility for the organisation.

Well done to one of our volunteers for capturing this beautiful damselfly in the gardens.

Did you know that damselflies have been around for more than 300 million years, making them older than the dinosaurs?

These delicate insects are also fantastic natural pest controllers, helping to keep mosquito populations in check.

You can often tell a damselfly from a dragonfly because damselflies usually rest with their wings folded neatly along their bodies.

Before taking to the air, they spend the first part of their lives underwater as nymphs, emerging later in their stunning adult form.

Next time you're exploring Martineau Gardens, keep an eye out for these fascinating little creatures. They're a wonderful reminder of the rich biodiversity that thrives here.

Neva and her Dad visited Martineau Gardens during the half-term holidays and told us that she would like to raise money for us as part of her school project.

She's going to be popping in on Saturdays to help us out with some watering, and her Dad has made a fundraising page for her.

Thanks, Neva!

In May, hundreds of charities, communities and faith groups came together to launch A Million Acts of Hope. It's a campaign celebrating the everyday acts of kindness, care and connection happening across the UK.

As part of , we invited visitors to our Spring Celebration event, participants in our Martineau Mondays wellbeing sessions, and visiting schoolchildren to share messages on our Tree of Hope.

What messages of hope would you add? 💚

It's !

This week (1–7 June) is Volunteers' Week, a UK-wide celebration recognising the incredible contributions volunteers make to organisations and communities across the country.

At Martineau Gardens, we're fortunate to have a wonderful team of volunteers who help make the gardens the special place they are. Their time, energy and dedication support everything we do, and we're grateful for every single one of them.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers - this week, and every week. We couldn't do it without you.

We have some lovely new sandpit toys that we bought with part of a grant from Birmingham Common Good Trust for revamping our Shipwreck Play Area and Education Zone.

They are made out of a bio-plastic that’s derived from sugar cane, so sustainable as well as fun!

Next time you visit with children, just ask one of our Visitor Welcome Volunteers or staff members if you can borrow a bag of them to play with.
