Take a moment to think about your safety around water this summer.

If you've been drinking or using drugs, water can be much more dangerous than it seems. Alcohol and drugs can affect your balance, judgement, awareness, and reaction times, making it harder to stay safe.

👉 Here are some simple tips to help keep you and your friends safe around water.

Yesterday, members of Aquarius VOICES attended Letters, Promises & Belonging: The Children of Windrush at the Midlands Arts Centre. Through powerful storytelling, music, culture and community, the performance celebrated the legacy, contributions and lasting impact of the Windrush Generation.

"Our stories aren't just about struggle and hardship."

Aquarius VOICES (Variety of Individuals Celebrating Every Story) champions lived experience and creates space for staff and volunteers to share their stories, this message resonated deeply. While Windrush Day was marked on 22nd June, it remains an important opportunity to reflect on the resilience, achievements and contributions of the Windrush Generation, and to recognise the importance of ensuring every story is heard, valued and remembered. ✨

A huge thank you to Tonia, Tajá and Elexi (Letters, Promises & Belonging) for such a moving and memorable performance 💛!

Leaving a v**e in direct sunlight or a hot car can cause it to overheat, leak, or damage the battery. In rare cases, overheated batteries can even become a fire risk ⚠️

Keep your v**e in a cool, shaded place and never leave it in a parked vehicle on a warm day.

Today, we celebrate all dads and father figures everywhere - our staff, volunteers, the people we support, and members of our communities.

We're also thinking of those whose dads are no longer with us, those missing a father figure today, and those who take on a fatherly role in the lives of others through their care, guidance, and support 💙✨

Recovery is only part of the journey at SIAS. We’re here to walk alongside you as you build a life that feels full, positive, and your own.

Here is Mark’s Story;

I started out as a Service User here at SIAS. I had been addicted to drugs for 30 years, starting in my early teens, which ultimately led to a journey of self-destruction. I became a prolific offender to fund my drug use and was in and out of prison. I lost all my self-worth, and it also affected my family, especially my mother. I had got to a point where I felt I was almost using drugs against my will, as I couldn’t see a way out, and I felt my life was over.

After reaching the desperation point, I went into rehab for 17 weeks, and this started my journey to recovery. I started volunteering at SIAS, then moved on to a part-time role and now work for SIAS full-time as an Outreach Practitioner, helping others on their journey through recovery. I love my role, and it has given me a real purpose in life to help others turn their lives around, too.

My personal life has also been transformed. I am now married, have enjoyed lots of wonderful holidays, and my friendship group has totally changed.

In April, I started my new role as an Outreach Practitioner for Aquarius, part of the SIAS partnership, a role that I could not have dreamed of a few years ago. I was previously a Peer Support Worker at SIAS, and the time I have spent in this role has given me the experience I need to take on my new position.

In my new role as an Outreach Practitioner, I help those who have issues with drugs and alcohol but have become disengaged and don’t know where to turn next. I want to find out what the barriers are for not engaging with services and how I can support them. I will be especially reaching out to people who are being discharged from prison or those on probation, where my lived experience, knowledge of the criminal justice system and understanding of the triggers that affect those leaving prison will be a great help.

Whether it's alcohol or drugs, getting behind the wheel under the influence can have serious consequences.

It's not just about being the driver. If you know someone has been drinking or taking drugs, think twice before getting into the car with them. Speaking up could help keep everyone safe.

The effects aren't always obvious to the person using them, but they can still put themselves, passengers, and other road users at risk.

This summer, make sure you've got a safe way home. Arrange a lift, use public transport, book a taxi, or choose a designated driver who isn't drinking or using drugs 🚗🚕

POV: You're about to get behind the wheel after using substances...

You think you feel fine.
You think you're okay to drive.
You tell yourself it's only a short journey.

But the problem is that alcohol and drugs can affect judgement, reaction times, concentration, and awareness. That means dangers can be missed, decisions can take longer, and situations can become serious in seconds.

Make it a night to remember, not a night to forget!
