In a disturbing incident that recently went viral in India, a man was reportedly forced to carry the skeleton remains of his deceased relative to a bank just to prove that the person had died. Due to rigid documentation requirements, officials allegedly refused to proceed without physical “proof,” pushing the man into an act that stripped both the deceased and the living of dignity.

Even if some details vary across reports, the reality it reflects is clear: systems can become so mechanical that they forget humanity.

Islam teaches ease, mercy, and justice in all matters. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Make things easy and do not make them difficult.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 69, Sahih Muslim 1734

Forcing a grieving person into such an extreme situation contradicts the very spirit of compassion that Islam emphasizes. Procedures are meant to serve people not burden them or take away their dignity.

A just society protects the vulnerable, especially in moments of loss.

Honor the dead. Ease the living. And never let procedures override humanity.
