As educators we know first hand the damage that is being done to our communities and to families we teach through messages of hate and blame. I'm sure many of us have had to offer comfort and reassurance to some of our students or their families who are, understandably, feeling vulnerable and targeted by aggressive and divisive messages in the media, in politics and in our communities from those who feel that being a "patriot" means hating others.
At the NEU we reject the idea that loving your country means spreading hate. We reject the idea that being 'patriotic' means demanding law abiding British citizens should cower just because they aren't white. And we reject the idea that the only people who deserve our support and love are 'our own'.
We believe that Britain is a welcoming and inclusive country and are proud to stand alongside other trade unions, community groups, faith groups and political groups to loudly proclaim that Racism Is Not Welcome Here.
If you're able to get to Newcastle on Saturday, come and stand with us.
Assemble at Grey’s Monument to march to counter the Far Right followed by a Unity Rally.
Tommy Robinson, well known racist, Islamophobe and right wing activist, along with Nick Tenconi leader of UKIP are coming to Newcastle.
Newcastle Unites & Stand Up to Racism North East are organising a Unity Rally to counter the Racism, Islamophobia and hate of the Fascists and to demonstrate the diversity of our communities sending a clear message that there is no room for racism in our beautiful City - a City of Sanctuary.
Join the counter demonstration to say ‘Racists not welcome !!’✊🏿✊🏻✊🏾
LOVE NEWCASTLE HATE RACISM
Whilst SUTR and Newcastle Unites have been working closely with Northumbria Police to make this event as safe as possible, there are always risks at events like these and it might be necessary to share information quickly.
Due to potential safety issues, we would not recommend you bring children or vulnerable adults.
As educators we feel that our communities are vital to the wellbeing of families and children and are the centre point for education. Defending our communities and supporting those in need doesn't end at the school gates.
If you can, stand with us on Saturday.
If you’re an NEU member and would like to meet up to walk in a group to the monument or would like to join our WhatsApp group about Saturday drop us a message.
