Heads of EHS: Past and Present 🎓

During Miss Edith Hopkins’ (1954-1967) headship the school moved to its new site on Westbourne Road. This was a six-year journey of planning, relocating and settling in. Miss Hopkins was hugely enthusiastic about music, when she first arrived at the school there was one instrument, which increased to 150 by her leaving.

She was also a great supporter of sport, overseeing a golden era or tennis, with EHS winning the Midland Girls’ Schools Tournament and repeatedly reaching the national under-18 finals for the Aberdare Cup.

Her legacy of creativity, energy, and opportunity continues to shape school life today.

✨ Back to School Reunion - 150 Years of EHS ✨

What a truly special weekend it was 💙 Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Back to School Reunion, celebrating 150 years of Edgbaston High School.

The turnout was fantastic, the reminiscing was heartfelt (and at times emotional 🥹), and the friendships - just as strong as ever. It was a beautiful reminder of the enduring EHS spirit 🌿 - one that stays with you, no matter how many years have passed.

From shared memories to new stories, it was a joy to see generations of EHS alumnae come together once again 🎓

📸 A full photo gallery will be available soon on Laurels Connect - so if you haven’t signed up yet, now’s the time! In the meantime, you can enjoy some teaser photos now on the News section of the Edgbaston High School website.

Here’s to 150 years of friendship, memories, and Futures Without Limits 💫

Heads of EHS: Past and Present 🎓

Miss Winifred Casswell (1931-1953) arrived at EHS at a time of low morale and brought with her energy, discipline and warmth. A passionate chemist, she strongly advocated for STEM teaching including hiring the school’s first physics teacher at a time when the subject was seen as a male domain, as well as increasing staff and curriculum time.
She also guided the school through the challenges of World War II, including preparing for evacuation and personally helping to transform the cellars into air raid shelters, with the help of long-serving caretaker Walter Whelan.

We’re delighted to celebrate former student Polly Starkie, who has secured a place on the highly competitive Erasmus Mundus MA in Journalism, along with a full scholarship 🎓✨

With just 10 scholarships awarded from around 700 applicants, this is an incredible achievement and a testament to Polly’s talent, hard work and ambition 🌍👏

She will study in Denmark and Germany, continuing a journey that began at EHS 🇩🇰🇩🇪 We’re so proud and can’t wait to see what she achieves next 💫

Heads of EHS: Past and Present 🎓

During her tenure as EHS’s 4th Headmistress, Miss Elsie Collier (1924-1931) transformed school life. She introduced overseas school trips, with pupils visiting the Louvre and Avignon, beginning EHS’s long tradition of international educational travel. A strong believer in co-operation, she established the House system and launched the School Committee, giving pupils a greater voice.

Miss Collier also expanded the school day to include afternoons for extracurriculars, introduced assignments and greater independence for the Sixth Form, brought lacrosse to the school, and guided EHS with resilience through challenging times.
