Heads of EHS: Past and Present 🎓

Mrs Susan Horsman (1987-1997) came to EHS as a Cambridge classics graduate and a former Head of a state school, bringing with her a modern, outward-looking approach to school leadership. She updated the curriculum and introduced new form names to align EHS with other independent and state schools, while ensuring every department benefitted from expanded facilities. Keen to strengthen pastoral care, she created the Heads of Year roles and enlarged the Senior Management Team, broadening staff roles and support structures.
Her decade of leadership helped shape a more contemporary, well resourced, and pupil centred EHS.

As we reach the end of another academic year, it feels only fitting to celebrate someone who has given so much to EHS over so many years.

At our 150th Birthday Back to School Reunion, we were delighted to present Anne Howarth with a special Long Service to EHS Award. From pupil to member of staff, Acting Head, alumna, and so much more in between, Anne has been an unwavering champion of our school and a treasured part of the EHS story.

Anne is the true definition of Fearlessly Female – a constant source of knowledge, inspiration and unwavering support for generations of the EHS community.

Thank you, Anne, for your dedication, your wisdom, and everything you have done for our school. Please join us in congratulating Anne in the comments!

🔍 Found, stuck to the inside cover of a hymn book belonging to EHS alumna Laura, Laura Meredith which she received on her first day at EHS in 1982.

Did you know that this is still sung in school on a regular basis, at special events and in assemblies and represents a great deal of EHS history. Could you sing along today?

Heads of EHS: Past and Present 🎓

During Miss Edith Hopkins’ (1954-1967) headship the school moved to its new site on Westbourne Road. This was a six-year journey of planning, relocating and settling in. Miss Hopkins was hugely enthusiastic about music, when she first arrived at the school there was one instrument, which increased to 150 by her leaving.

She was also a great supporter of sport, overseeing a golden era or tennis, with EHS winning the Midland Girls’ Schools Tournament and repeatedly reaching the national under-18 finals for the Aberdare Cup.

Her legacy of creativity, energy, and opportunity continues to shape school life today.

✨ Back to School Reunion - 150 Years of EHS ✨

What a truly special weekend it was 💙 Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Back to School Reunion, celebrating 150 years of Edgbaston High School.

The turnout was fantastic, the reminiscing was heartfelt (and at times emotional 🥹), and the friendships - just as strong as ever. It was a beautiful reminder of the enduring EHS spirit 🌿 - one that stays with you, no matter how many years have passed.

From shared memories to new stories, it was a joy to see generations of EHS alumnae come together once again 🎓

Heads of EHS: Past and Present 🎓

Miss Winifred Casswell (1931-1953) arrived at EHS at a time of low morale and brought with her energy, discipline and warmth. A passionate chemist, she strongly advocated for STEM teaching including hiring the school’s first physics teacher at a time when the subject was seen as a male domain, as well as increasing staff and curriculum time.
She also guided the school through the challenges of World War II, including preparing for evacuation and personally helping to transform the cellars into air raid shelters, with the help of long-serving caretaker Walter Whelan.
