📖✨ Meet Esther, a Black Country Roots & Realities participant, sharing her thoughts on David Olusoga’s Black and British: A Short, Essential History.

For many of our young people, the book has been a starting point for looking deeper, questioning what they thought they knew and discovering the rich and complex history of Black people in Britain.

Through Black Country Roots & Realities, we’re creating spaces for young people to explore history, spark conversations and develop a deeper understanding of the people, experiences and stories that have helped shape Britain.

Meet Chris Day, an internationally renowned glass artist whose unique work explores and represents the challenges and experiences faced throughout history by African, Caribbean and mixed heritage communities. 🖤✨

As part of Black Country Roots & Realities, our young people are developing their skills as oral historians, learning how to listen, ask questions and capture real stories directly from the people who have shaped their communities.

In this third pre-interview in our series, Chris shares a little about his creative journey, his passion for glass art and the stories and experiences that inspire his work.

It’s these personal stories, creative perspectives and lived experiences that help bring history to life, while giving our young people the opportunity to explore how heritage can be preserved and shared in different ways.

Session 10 of Black Country Roots and Realities sharpened our communication skills. We engaged our mind and bodies and built our confidence as interviewers.

We took part in interactive activities, that ended with us creating radio shows allowing us to share our knowledge in local history and serve as a practice run to the real life interviews we will conduct with local community heroes.

Session 9 of Black Country Roots and Realities challenged us to think differently about what it means to become real social historians.

Through interactive activities, we explored communication and connection across cultures, before delving deeper into the life of local community champion David Bennett. Working together, we researched his story and created timelines highlighting the moments that shaped his life and the impact he has had on our community.

A day of discovery, teamwork, creativity and learning, bringing local history to life through the eyes of our Young Historians.
