Our HAF session, funded by Bring it on Brum, last week saw 69 of us heading off for a fantastic day at Dudley Zoo.
We spent the day exploring everything the zoo had to offer. Some enjoyed the play areas and fun fair, while others climbed to the top of the castle. Some preferred to stay on the ground and take in the impressive falcon displays. Everyone was able to explore at their own pace โ some lasted longer than others, but every child had the opportunity to try different activities, knowing they were surrounded by others who understood and supported them.
A massive shout-out to Dudley Zoo for the work they do to make their venue more accessible and inclusive. They have communication boards dotted around the zoo, a social story that can be used to prepare for your visit, and sensory bags available to hire, including ear defenders and fidget items. Mobility scooters and wheelchairs are also available.
We visit lots of different places with our families, and it's always brilliant to find those hidden gems that genuinely make an effort to be more accessible. These little touches can make such a huge difference to families like ours, helping everyone feel welcome, supported and able to enjoy the experience in their own way.
