Crisis Skylight Birmingham: Working Together to End Homelessness

At Crisis Skylight Birmingham, the team walks alongside people who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of it, offering one-to-one guidance, health and wellbeing support, help into learning and work, and steady support through complex housing systems.
This short film brings those experiences to life.

Staff, volunteers, and members share what homelessness looks like in Birmingham today, the pressures people are facing, and how personalised support and everyday encouragement help people move forward. Their voices reflect a community built on trust, care, and the belief that change is possible.

As homelessness continues to rise across the city, sharing this film helps shine a light on the work happening every day to prevent homelessness and make sure no one faces it alone.

Moving on after years in an HMO.

After several years living in shared HMO accommodation, one of our members has now moved into a self-contained home of their own.

The journey took time, persistence and plenty of support, but they now have somewhere they can begin to properly settle and make their own.

At Crisis Skylight Birmingham, our teams work alongside people for as long as it takes by exploring housing options, navigating applications and helping turn an offer of accommodation into a home.

A brilliant outcome and a big step forward. 🏡

Rough sleeping has been rising, which is one of the most dangerous and devastating forms of homelessness.

So, it's fantastic to see the Prime Minister’s national drive in England to get people off the streets by Christmas.

Today's announcement sends a clear message:

In the 21st century, we will not tolerate a situation where people are forced to sleep on our streets.

Every year, we help thousands of people sleeping rough and in other types of homelessness like sofa surfing and temporary accommodation.

In the long term, homelessness can only be ended with safe, affordable homes, and today’s announcement is a positive step towards achieving that.

We are ready to work with the government to deliver this vital intervention.

And we will continue to help people this winter and all year round to leave homelessness behind for good.

Just so delighted that this archaic law is now finally history

🚨 Breaking news: from today, it's no longer a crime to sleep rough in England and Wales.

The Vagrancy Act has finally been repealed.

For more than 200 years, this archaic law criminalised people for sleeping rough or begging. But no more.

This victory was years in the making, and came from working together

We worked with people with lived experience of homelessness, charities, police forces, lawyers, local authorities and politicians of all parties across England and Wales to make this change possible.

That included partners such as Liberty, Homeless Link, Cymorth Cymru, St Mungo's, Centrepoint, The Wallich, Shelter Cymru and key parliamentarians Bob Blackman MP, Paula Barker MP, Baroness Kennedy, Layla Moran MP, Lord Best and Angela Rayner MP. Thank you all so much!

Homelessness prevention is so important. The earlier that you can get help the better the outcome. We are so glad that Street Support Network exists in the West Midlands so that people can find help before the crisis hits.

Earlier support can create more options.

Housing stability is influenced by many factors, including finances, health, employment, relationships and access to support.

Crisis Skylight Birmingham is looking for volunteer delivery drivers to support members as they move into their new homes. The role involves driving a Crisis van, helping transport belongings, and assisting with loading and unloading items.

In this role, you’ll:
📦 Drive a Crisis van to support house moves
📦Deliver essential supplies to members
📦 Help load and unload items
📦 Be part of a team committed to ending homelessness

We’re looking for people who are:
🔹 Reliable and organised
🔹 Non-judgemental and compassionate
🔹 Comfortable with manual handling and lifting
🔹 Passionate about supporting others
