NEW publication

"What invariably intrigues me about art is the process the artist has worked through to get to the final piece they offer for display. Looking into an artist’s sketch book feels like looking into their soul, and no more so than this in-depth study into the well-known historical event that we now call Good Friday."

We are excited to share with you this new 26 page booklet sharing which follows the story of the production of the artwork created by Ben Ecclestone, for Words from the Cross.

"Ben has studied the documented history as well as features around the culture and, perhaps most importantly, his own personal understanding as a believer in the resurrection of Christ. I have been privileged to have been able to ask questions, to hear Ben’s explanations, and to see an insight into his sketch books. The information that follows, I hope, will draw you nearer to the soul of this public exhibition."

Words from the Cross started its life as a printed publication of words and images by Adrian Plass and Ben Ecclestone. It is now an exhibition and portfolio. This booklet is designed to accompany the exhibition.

Birmingham Cathedral Launches a new Nativity Set for 2025

Birmingham Cathedral’s new Nativity Set was made by the artist Melanie Tomlinson. We are grateful to The Birmingham Municipal Charity and The Westhill Endowment for their generous support of this artwork.

The New Nativity commissioned by Birmingham Cathedral weaves together the stories of the Birth of Jesus at Christmas, the heritage of Birmingham, the stories of the cathedral community and the needs of the world. It provides a visual focus for the Christmas celebrations helping visitors and worshippers to appreciate the heart of Christmas anew.

In Christian tradition the Nativity is a beautiful and contemplative reminder of the gift of the Christ Child at Christmas. But it also reminds us of the difficult themes which the Bible stories tell us. As well as the story of God’s closeness and God’s love, we find poverty, a child born homeless in a stable and the Holy Family forced to flee as refugees to Egypt.

The Cathedral website has lots of information about how the artist and community created this new Nativity. Please see a link in the comments or browse their website.

Our interactive exhibition Art and Soul went up to Altrincham, Manchester, today.

In this exhibition you answer three questions by choosing from 12 paintings … and you create your own exhibition … until the next participant comes along and makes theirs. There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s designed to help you think about yourself.

This exhibition has been out around the country for most of this year but it’s available to book, and you can buy your own mini set … 14 postcards to use at home in the same way. (Just £3 plus postage.)
