Last night we had the pleasure of attending the Labour Party Conference Fringe event ‘SEND Provision & Inclusion Reception’, hosted by Susana Castro-Kemp from the University of Birmingham and Sir Mufti Hamid Patel CBE.

We were delighted to hear from Georgia Gould, Minister of State (Minister for School Standards) about aspirations for SEND policies that bring together education, health and social care.

It was the perfect occassion to introduce our new Trustees Amanda Allard and Rosemary (Rosie) H Jenkins, who, alongside CEO Natalie Raven Morris, spent the evening discussing the challenges and opportunities facing SEND provision.

Shout out to Hazel from Worcestershire Parent Carer Forum for organising an important meeting that brought the ICB face to face with the realities of parents and CYP across Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Coventry and Warwickshire (and lets face it, most of the country).

We had positive discussions on developing a regional feeding pathway. Key proposals include:

• A locally designed pathway

• Co-production with commissioners, clinicians, councils, schools, Parent Carer Forums and the FED Foundation

• A tiered model combining universal training, multidisciplinary triage and specialist provision for children with the most complex needs

• A broader focus that includes developmental feeding difficulties, dysphagia and ARFID

• Recognition that training alone is not enough, with service capacity needing to be funded alongside workforce development

Encouragingly, SEND family voice will remain central to the design process through continued involvement of Parent Carer Forums.

We look forward to supporting this work and sharing learning from established pathways elsewhere in the region.

This week The Feeding Trust attended the School Food APPG in Parliament, chaired by Sharon Hodgson MP and welcomed an update from Early Education Minister Paul Waugh on the future of the School Food Standards.

We raised the importance of ensuring children with SEND and medical feeding difficulties can access and benefit from school food. It was encouraging to hear recognition that food uptake is a key challenge, and that food education and skill development have an important role in supporting participation.

As guidance develops, there is an opportunity to ensure that inclusion, feeding development and participation sit alongside nutrition in discussions about school food systems.

The best thing The Feeding Trust has taught me is the word crunchy! 😅

My three year old loves to show us how noisy his crunching can be, it's often our way to distract and minimise food-refusal

It's not always easy to remain pressure-free and it's not easy to relearn our eating language, but small steps can help build a child's confidence around food

The Feeding Trust 'bridging the gap between food provision and food inclusion' but, what does that mean?

Food provision refers to the act of supplying, distributing and ensuring access to food. It involves policies, government changes. sustainability, nutrition and all decisions that make food accesible.

Food inclusion ensures that all individuals, regardless of their needs, are able to benefit from food provision. Inclusion requires individual differences to be recognised and supported in order to allow everyone a full and equitable participation in everyday life.

The gap occurs when children can’t eat the food provided. Lots of children, particularly those with SEND, struggle to eat - it’s more than just ‘a phase’ - it’s a case of not being able to. Theres is a gap between provision and inclusion.

At The Feeding Trust we're fighting to bridge the gap between food provision and food inclusion. A prime example of 'the gap' is when families access a food bank, but the children don't, can't or won't eat the food.
We recently worked with Redditch Foodbank - AOK to provide a food activity pack to their families.
Each family was given a booklet with 6 pressure-free food based activities to complete weekly.
We received some amazing feedback and we'd love to carry this work out further with more organisations, please get in touch!

If we’re successful, the funding will help us bring Eating As Learning to Kids Rule, providing support for children who struggle with food and feeding.

And this is something incredibly close to our hearts.

We know first-hand that eating isn’t always as simple as “they’ll eat when they’re hungry”. For some children and their families, food can be a real challenge — and having access to the right support, understanding and practical help can make such a difference.

We also know we’re far from the only family experiencing this.

That’s why being able to bring this support into Kids Rule would be an amazing asset for so many of our families and our wider community. 💙
