Do you have an old blackbird nest in your garden?
We need your help with research at the University of Birmingham!
Lots of us already have old nests tucked away in hedges, shrubs, sheds, gardens or even local greenspaces from earlier in the breeding season, and if you have an abandoned blackbird nest, we’d love to have it!
Taking part is really easy:
📦 Carefully place the nest in a spare box (an old Amazon or cake box is perfect!) and wrap it in newspaper or bubble wrap.
📍 Pop in a note with where the nest was found (e.g. co-ordinates) and, if you know, any details about the blackbirds that used it.
📮 Then simply post it to us at the University of Birmingham or if you are local I can come and collect it!
These nests can provide really valuable information for our research into blackbird breeding, nest construction and how birds are responding to their environment. Something already sitting unused in your garden could genuinely help our science!
Please only remove nests that are completely abandoned and show no signs of current activity.
If you think you have one, aren't sure whether it's a blackbird nest, or would like the postal details, just send me a photo/message at [email protected] and I can help.
We're particularly interested in nests from Birmingham, Coventry and the surrounding areas, but nests from elsewhere in the UK are very welcome too.

I am pleased to report that work has begun at Swanshurst Park in strengthening security by adding further trip rails past the car park towards Swanshurst Lane. This is very good news and hopefully, will deter future unauthorised encampments

With Liz Ellison and Barry Henley. The Council had done a good job collecting loose litter from the travellers and their bags but there was a lot of rubbish in the bushes and brambles which needed attention as the Council do not usually venture there so we collected this load and noted locations of flytipping - mostly building material and garden waste. Whilst we were there, we met 2 contractors who have been given the task of removing all this flytipping and I am assured that it will be complete by this weekend. Also on the Park was a man placing much larger and more substantial logs in front of the existing one. Although we cannot have trenches in the outside of the trees because of roots, I have suggested to the Council that they dig a trench in the inside of the logs and I believe that will work

This morning I went up to Swanshurst Park to see how much rubbish was left after the travellers had left or if the Council had cleared up (some hopes). I noticed that the bins by the car park had been emptied today but the rubbish left by the bin further down had been left in this terrible state. As I felt that park users may wish to use the bench in comfort, I felt compelled to clear up that particular rubbish, although we are continuing to refuse to clear up the rest of the rubbish left by travellers do that the Council will have to do it, as they should do. The annoying this is that the travellers had left most of their rubbish in bags as I have been requesting but, as the Council leave it so long before clearing up, the crows get into the bags and make a mess. Hopefully, they will do it soon

Thanks to those of you have informed me that the bailiffs are on site at Swanshurst Park to make sure the travellers leave today and also that there has been a great deal of mess and damage which will need to be repaired. I have reported this to Parks Department and hopefully it will be dealt with at the beginning of next week

I have just had a report that travellers have returned to Swanshurst Park. I have reported this to the Council and also to the Police, in the hope that they might do for us what they have done for Daisy Farm, Chinn Brook and Northfield in moving them off the Park. I hope that they will do this

As we were unable to join the group litter pick next Sunday with Friends of Daisy Farm, Barry Henley and I went up to Daisy Farm to do what we could and give support from Friends of Swanshurst Park. We collected 3 bags of rubbish, mostly collected from the brook where we have done the best we can. 2 bags by the bin by the playground and another one left at another entrance
