Your friend or family member's wellbeing is probably your priority when they’re going through a tough time. But it's also important to make sure you’re looking after yourself - it's not selfish. Try out some of our tips on how to take care of your wellbeing:

- Stay connected: having someone to share your worries with can help and could lead to the right support for you and your friends or family.

- Stay healthy: it's important you try to get plenty of sleep, eat healthy foods and stay active.

- Take time for yourself: Day to day life can be tiring. You might find you stop doing things that you enjoy. Please don't feel guilty for making time for yourself. Your happiness is important too. 💜

Caring for someone can mean a wide range of things and many people don’t see themselves as carers for a variety of reasons.

The NHS defines a carer as “anyone who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid.”

Looking after someone who struggles with alcohol or drugs can feel worrying and isolating. If you would like to find out more about the support we offer carers, call us on 0121 227 5890 or email [email protected] and someone from our friendly team will be in touch.

You don't have to be a registered carer to receive our support.

💜 Carers Week 2026 💜

This year, we’re shining a light on the power of carer friendly communities’ places where unpaid carers are recognised, valued, and supported every day.

From local services to community groups, these spaces make a real difference by helping carers access the support and opportunities they need.

Together, we can build communities that truly support carers in all areas of life.

For Volunteers’ Week, Deborah O'Neill, our Senior Social Worker, shares her reflections on her social work students.

“Social work students bring knowledge and understanding of social work legislation and theory to CGL that supports recovery coordinators and service users. We have had 5 Social Work Students over the past year; all have been dedicated to supporting our clients. The feedback from clients has been positive, comments such as "He has made me feel at ease. .... is calm, nice and polite. Another client said, " Any problems I had, she dealt with, any anxieties I had, she managed them in the best way" Comments from students "The knowledge and experience I have gained during this placement will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping my future professional practice" Comments from senior management, He has worked alongside the entry into service team to ensure that service users accessing treatment are supported and engaged into treatment. These comments highlight the importance and benefits of supporting student social workers in CGL, they have all thoroughly enjoyed their placement and were sad to go. Thank you to all who supported them and thankyou to all the service users who allowed them into their lives.”

Today, we’re hearing from a member of Dave’s team, who shared the following about Dave Titley in appreciation of Volunteers’ Week.

“I love listening to Dave and whatever we have prepared for the morning Dave always hits the spot. He always makes it clear to the clients that they mean a lot to his recovery. He keeps his advice plain and simple it's never over complicated!!! Dave is consistent the clients have the luxury of getting to know him. Dave is always happy to give that extra bit of wisdom whether it be a book, someone to talk to or a giggle. Thank you Dave for making our groups real, funny and caring all in 1 go!!!!”

This is Lizzie McCulloch. For Volunteers’ Week she wanted to share her experience as a Recovery Support Volunteer.

“I have genuinely valued my time volunteering with the CGL Homeless Team, where I’ve been able to use my lived experience in a meaningful and purposeful way. Being part of such a supportive and dedicated team is incredibly rewarding, and the staff continue to inspire me with their compassion, professionalism, and commitment to the people they support.

This opportunity continues to support both my personal growth and professional development. It has helped build my confidence, strengthen my skills, and deepen my understanding of the complexities surrounding homelessness and recovery. It plays an important role in my ongoing journey, shaping both the work I do and the person I am becoming.

I’m grateful to be part of something so impactful. The experiences, connections, and learning I gain here mean a great deal to me, and CGL will always hold a special place in my heart as I continue to grow.”

Thanks for sharing your story Lizzie and keep up the great work! 💜
