This week we’re thrilled to welcome Katrina Brigmane to our Pathways to Progress speaker series! 🎉
Katrina is a first-year English student 📖 at the University of Cambridge, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, and she’ll be joining us to share her incredible journey, insights into studying English at the highest level, and tips for our young people as they look towards their own futures.✨
But why does this matter so much for our community? The statistics speak for themselves. 👇 The West Midlands has the lowest GCSE standard pass rate of any region in England, with fewer than 63% of students achieving a grade 4 or above across their subjects. And when it comes to English Language, one of only two compulsory GCSEs every student must sit, nationally fewer than 55% of 16-year-olds achieved a grade 5 (strong pass) last year. 📊 Without a grade 4 in English Language, young people face barriers to college courses, apprenticeships, and countless careers. It is one of the most important qualifications you can hold. 🔑
Katrina knows first-hand what it takes to beat the odds. 💪 Alongside her degree, she volunteers her time mentoring A-level students from underrepresented backgrounds applying to top universities, people just like you. 🫵 She has worked as a teaching assistant, a private tutor, a news writer and a healthcare worker! She brings a wealth of lived experience that goes far beyond the lecture hall. 📚
This is a session you simply cannot afford to miss. 🌟 Whether you’re currently studying English, thinking about university, or just want to hear from someone who has navigated the journey from school to Cambridge, Katrina’s story is one of determination, hard work, and possibility. 🚀
Come and be inspired.💡
