What an incredible evening at BYO 🌟

We had the privilege of welcoming Dr Shirley Ye to deliver this year’s Annual Youth Futures Lecture 📚 Her talk, Amazing Women Who Changed China, took our young people on a journey through the lives of remarkable women 💃 who shaped the course of history.

Pin-drop silence in the room said it all 🤫 Our young people were completely captivated, and left knowing so much more about the fearless women who refused to let history pass them by.

We ended the evening the best way we know how, sharing a warm Xenara meal together 🍽️ Community, knowledge, and joy, all under one roof.

Thank you Dr Shirley Ye for an unforgettable afternoon 🙏 This is exactly what Youth Futures is all about.

The Annual Youth Futures Lecture 2026 is almost here 🌟

This year we welcome the brilliant Dr Shirley Ye (Harvard, PhD) for a talk entitled:

Amazing Women Who Changed China

“From a warrior who disguised herself as a man to fight in her father’s place, to the only woman ever to rule China as Emperor, to a revolutionary who left everything behind to fight for women’s freedom — Chinese history is full of extraordinary women whose stories are rarely told outside China. This talk brings some of them to life for young people and their families, spanning two thousand years of history, legend, and culture. We’ll meet rebels and revolutionaries, singers whose music crossed borders that politics could not, artists who asked uncomfortable questions, and communities of women who invented their own secret writing system rather than be silenced. The talk weaves together myth, biography, and history to explore a simple but powerful idea: that women have always found ways to shape the world around them, even when the world told them they couldn’t. Expect stories, surprises, and a few questions worth taking home.”

All welcome 🤗 Free entry 🎟️

Xenara will be served to all at the end of the event 🍽️

We’re pleased to share that Britannia Youth Organisation has partnered with to deliver their Me and Money programme 💷

This weekend, we had the pleasure of welcoming Amy Hepingstall to BYO, where she led a truly brilliant session with our young people on everything money, finance, and banking 🏦

The workshop was packed with real, practical knowledge that young people rarely get the chance to explore in such an accessible and engaging way. Amy walked them through the debt cycle, breaking down how easily people can fall into financial difficulty and what warning signs to look out for 📉 She covered the essentials of standing orders and direct debits, explained how credit cards really work 💳 and opened up important conversations about financial scams and how to stay protected both online and offline 🔒

The young people also explored the importance of savings 🐖 budgeting, and how interest works; building a strong foundation of financial confidence that will serve them well into adulthood. The session sparked genuine curiosity and conversation, with our young people asking thoughtful questions throughout 💡

We can’t wait to welcome Amy back for the second session taking place in May. A huge thank you to Mental Health UK for making this possible and to Amy for bringing such energy and expertise to our community 💜

What a weekend at Pathways to Progress! 🎓

It was a real pleasure to welcome Katrina Brigmane from the University of Cambridge to deliver an incredible session for our young people 📚 Katrina led a thought-provoking presentation on English Literature, showing how a single piece of writing can be interpreted in so many different ways💡 Our young people explored how literature can be read through the lenses of philosophy, politics, and psychology, uncovering layers of meaning they might never have considered before 🌍

Katrina also shared her personal journey to Cambridge ✨ giving our young people a real insight into what it took to get there and what life at one of the world’s top universities is actually like. She then opened the floor to answer questions about Cambridge itself and how to make it there 🏛️

To finish off a brilliant afternoon, our young people sat together to share a Xenara meal 🍽️ and received Easter eggs to celebrate Easter Sunday 🐣

These are the moments that make Pathways to Progress so special. Connecting our young people with inspiring role models, opening their minds to new ways of thinking, and showing them that the very best opportunities are absolutely within their reach 🚀

This week we’re thrilled to welcome Katrina Brigmane to our Pathways to Progress speaker series! 🎉

Katrina is a first-year English student 📖 at the University of Cambridge, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, and she’ll be joining us to share her incredible journey, insights into studying English at the highest level, and tips for our young people as they look towards their own futures.✨

But why does this matter so much for our community? The statistics speak for themselves. 👇 The West Midlands has the lowest GCSE standard pass rate of any region in England, with fewer than 63% of students achieving a grade 4 or above across their subjects. And when it comes to English Language, one of only two compulsory GCSEs every student must sit, nationally fewer than 55% of 16-year-olds achieved a grade 5 (strong pass) last year. 📊 Without a grade 4 in English Language, young people face barriers to college courses, apprenticeships, and countless careers. It is one of the most important qualifications you can hold. 🔑

Katrina knows first-hand what it takes to beat the odds. 💪 Alongside her degree, she volunteers her time mentoring A-level students from underrepresented backgrounds applying to top universities, people just like you. 🫵 She has worked as a teaching assistant, a private tutor, a news writer and a healthcare worker! She brings a wealth of lived experience that goes far beyond the lecture hall. 📚

This is a session you simply cannot afford to miss. 🌟 Whether you’re currently studying English, thinking about university, or just want to hear from someone who has navigated the journey from school to Cambridge, Katrina’s story is one of determination, hard work, and possibility. 🚀

Come and be inspired.💡

What a session this weekend! We were delighted to welcome Ali Timmons from Health Data Research UK to week 3️⃣ of our data literacy project 📊

The children explored how things like screen time 🖥️ mood 😄exercise 🏃‍♀️ and sleep 😴 hours are all connected, and how tracking these patterns can give us real insight into our daily lives 🔍

At the end of the session, Ali shared her personal journey and her role in public health data research, working to make sure data is understood and accessible to everyone💡 She also took questions from the children, which covered everything from AI to what the future of data looks like in our world 🤖

Each young person created their own personal data tracker to take home, so over this week they’ll be collecting and monitoring their own information, which we will discuss this Sunday, in an effort to spot trends and make positive changes 📋! It’s hands-on learning that goes way beyond the classroom and into their everyday routines 🏠

The energy in the room was brilliant, with hands shooting up, big questions being asked, and so much curiosity about how real researchers use data to make a difference 🙌 The children also went home with Xenara (free food) packages to round off a really special afternoon 🎁

This is exactly what our work is all about: giving young people access to experiences, knowledge and people that open up their world 🌍 Huge thank you to Ali and HDR UK for making it happen 🙏
