Bolstering The UK - Africa Trade, Investment, Market Access and Diaspora Engagement

The UK–Africa trade and investment relationship continues to expand, with bilateral trade and investment reaching £50 billions annually. Africa’s rapidly growing population, increasing urbanisation, digital transformation, infrastructure development, and the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat present significant opportunities for UK and African businesses alike.

The UK–Africa economic partnership holds substantial long-term potential as both regions seek to deepen trade ties, foster innovation, and accelerate sustainable development. UAS leverages the growing influence of the African diaspora in the UK as a powerful bridge for trade, investment, entrepreneurship, knowledge transfer, and international business collaboration. By strengthening connections between businesses, investors, and institutions, the programme aims to drive inclusive growth, enhance competitiveness, create jobs, and position the UK and Africa as strategic partners in shaping a more prosperous and interconnected global economy.

This week, The African Business Chamber (AfBC) team and members were delighted to attend and participate in the inaugural London-Africa Business Summit, hosted by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, at City Hall on 4 June 2026. The landmark event brought together around 150 political, business and institutional leaders from across Africa and the UK to strengthen investment and trade partnerships. The summit underscored London’s ambition to become the leading global hub for African investment and enterprise, while promoting a new era of collaboration based on mutual economic growth, innovation, and shared prosperity.

The summit highlighted several significant achievements, including more than £30 million in foreign direct investment (FDI) from African businesses into London since the Mayor’s trade mission to Africa in July 2025. Participants also noted that 117 African companies are currently listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE), making it the most African-focused exchange outside Johannesburg. With UK–Africa trade reaching £52 billion in 2025 and projected to grow to £62 billion by 2030, the event reinforced the immense opportunities for deeper commercial engagement between the two regions. AfBC was proud to contribute to these important discussions and to support initiatives that strengthen economic ties between Africa and the UK.

The Government of Ghana, in partnership with The World Bank Group and other development partners, has officially launched the AgriConnect Compact, a strategic national framework designed to accelerate agricultural transformation, strengthen food security, drive job creation, reduce dependence on food imports, and unlock investment across key agricultural value chains.

The AgriConnect Compact establishes a unified platform for coordinated public and private sector action aimed at enhancing productivity, expanding value addition, improving access to markets and finance, and building resilience throughout Ghana’s agri-food system. The framework prioritises high-impact value chains, including cocoa, oil palm, rice, maize, and poultry, while also supporting strategic sectors such as cashew, coconut, rubber, fisheries, and the forest economy.

During its initial implementation phase (2026–2030), the Compact is expected to improve food and nutrition security for approximately 2.99 million people and contribute to the creation of more than 2.6 million jobs by 2035. The estimated financing requirement for this phase is US$3.5 billion, to be mobilized through a combination of Government of Ghana resources, development partner support, and private sector investment.
