We had a very busy day at Spark yesterday!

We had some very special visitors at the Hub as we welcomed Natalie Reeves Billing DL FRSA and the Lord Mayor of Wirral.

And they brought someone very special with them... Mayor Bear! 🐻👑

Our Mayor Bear represents Spark’s donation to the Mayor’s Charity, which is supporting Wirral Carers and the Paul Lavelle Foundation this Mayoral Year.

Both organisations do incredible work supporting people across Wirral and we’re really proud to play our part.

A big thank you to Kevin, our CEO, for making this personal contribution on behalf of Spark.

But our busy day didn’t stop there!

We were also delighted to welcome Support2Independence to the Hub, who spoke to our members about the support worker opportunities available.

Laura from Support2Independence talked through the roles, answered questions and gave our members the chance to find out more about working in the sector.

There was lots of interest, and we’re especially pleased that everyone who applies has been guaranteed an interview!

Our members found the session really engaging and can’t wait to get their applications in.

A day full of community, opportunities and plenty of reasons to be proud of our members!

BIG NEWS FROM SPARK! 💙

We are absolutely thrilled that Natalie Reeves Billing DL FRSA has agreed to become Spark Youth’s Honorary President for Employability!

Natalie brings an incredible mix of experience, creativity, leadership and community passion to Spark.

A Toxteth-born author, social entrepreneur, literacy advocate, award-winning social business leader and Deputy Lieutenant of Merseyside, Natalie has spent her career creating opportunities, championing communities and helping people see what’s possible.

Through her work with Split Perspectivz and The Animates, Natalie has brought together education, creativity, industry and storytelling to inspire young people and open their eyes to new opportunities.

Now she’s bringing that experience to Spark.

As our Honorary President for Employability, Natalie will help us build stronger connections with employers and community leaders, champion young talent and support our mission to create more pathways into meaningful employment for young people across the Liverpool City Region.

We’re hugely grateful to Natalie for taking on this role and for believing in what we’re building at Spark.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming the fantastic team from Briggs Marine to Spark for an exciting and interactive Meet the Employer session!

We welcomed 20 of our members, who got the opportunity to learn more about Briggs Marine, explore the different departments within the business and discover the wide range of career opportunities available within the industry.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Briggs Marine session without putting our members to the test, so our members took on the challenge of getting into the immersion suits in under 55 seconds!

Following the session, the Briggs Marine team shared their expertise by supporting our members with their CVs and job applications, including guidance on key words, skills and information to help them stand out!

It was fantastic to see our members feeling energised, motivated and excited about the opportunities that could lie ahead.

A huge thank you to the incredible team at Briggs Marine for spending the day with us, sharing your knowledge and creating such an inspiring and engaging environment at Spark. We can’t wait to see where these conversations lead!

🚢 "I never knew you could do THAT in shipbuilding!"

That was one of the feelings we wanted young people to leave Spark with after an amazing day with the team from Balaena Birkenhead.

More than 25 young people joined us for a day designed to open their eyes to a sector that many had probably never considered as a career option. And honestly... they were brilliant.

Our CEO, Kevin Rodgers, kicked things off by talking about something we believe passionately about at Spark:

👉 You can't dream about a future you haven't been given the chance to see.

That's why exposure matters. That's why conversations matter. And that's why days like this matter.

Mike Hill, Managing Director of Balaena, then shared his own story, which started around 30 years ago as an apprentice engineer and took him all the way to MD. What a story to share with young people who are just starting to think about their own futures.

Mike encouraged everyone to ask questions, get involved and make the most of the day. And they certainly did!

Liz Walker and Colin Nuttall got everyone moving with a brilliant ship-themed icebreaker before the young people headed around five different workstations to discover what really goes on behind the scenes at Balaena.

They got hands-on with equipment and resources, met members of the team and discovered just how many different careers are involved in building ships, including design, engineering, technology, skilled trades, project management and problem solving. There was also a particularly special moment when they met some of the people behind the brand-new Mersey Ferry for the Liverpool City Region.

The Balaena team also shared their own career journeys, showing that there isn't always one straight route into a career.

And then came the big reveal...

🎉 Balaena are opening their doors to Spark young people for the THIRD year running!

Everyone who attended will be invited back to Spark on 8 October to submit an expression of interest and CV. From those submissions, 10 young people will be selected to spend a day at the shipyard, including a shipyard tour, lunch, a behind-the-scenes experience and interviews with the team.

Now THAT is an opportunity.

A massive thank you to everyone at Balaena Birkenhead for giving your time, sharing your experience and, most importantly, believing in the potential of young people. You haven't just talked about careers, you've opened a door. And who knows where that door might lead. ❤️

Have your say, embolden your voice.

On here, we often promote our activities, showcase our achievements and those of our brilliant young people. You see the events we put on for young people before they happen and the outcomes created after they finish.

By now, you're familiar with Spark's voice. We're doing something different today.

This isn't Spark's voice anymore... It's yours.

Many of you, when you come in for an event, to see your job coach or for a drop-in to get some extra support, will see Myles on the front desk welcoming you in and offering you water and showing you where you need to get for an event or appointment.

That isn't his only role, though. He is also the Chair of our youth voice: Sparklings.

Sparklings is your voice and your say about Spark. Any concerns, suggestions or complaints go right to the Sparklings and they can take it all the way to the top.

You can be part of that voice too!

If you're the parent or guardian of one of our young members, we encourage you to really promote this opportunity to them.
