Today marks 30 years since my father, Hemraj Goyal, left us. A quiet and unassuming man, he lived a life of extraordinary dedication, strength, and sacrifice.
Arriving in the UK alone in late ‘69 to build a better future for his family of nine children must have been daunting. Yet, he faced those challenges with quiet resilience. Working as a bus conductor through the cold, damp winters—despite his struggles with asthma—he persevered, driven by his unwavering commitment to provide for us. Alongside my mother, whose life was also devoted to serving the family, they worked tirelessly to create a foundation of love, hard work, and selflessness.
This year, it was an immense honour to inaugurate the Mandir in Moga, Punjab, in my parents’ memory—a place that holds special significance. It was in Moga, at the Dev Samaj, where my father experienced a profound transformation in the 1960s. This sacred space now stands as a tribute to the values and faith that shaped his life and ours.
Through the Goyal Foundation, renamed in honour of both my mum and dad, we have been privileged to impact countless lives across the world. From supporting vulnerable individuals and families to empowering young people and championing social care, the foundation embodies the values they lived by. Their compassion and dedication to service continue to guide the work we do and ensure their legacy lives on in the hearts of those we have been fortunate enough to help.
My father’s life was a testament to humility and strength. Though his presence was understated, his impact was immeasurable. He taught us perseverance and the importance of family through his actions, not his words.
I miss them both dearly. Their love, sacrifices, and legacy continue to inspire me every day. They remind me to cherish family, to work hard, and to live with purpose and gratitude.
Dad, Mum—your legacy lives on in the lives you built, the values you instilled in us, and the work we continue to do in your name. You may be gone, but your love and sacrifices will forever be a part of who we are.
Forever missed, always loved.
