Rotary Club of Billericay Rotary Club of Billericay was the first Rotary club in Billericay, and is dedicated to serving its community.

It meets most Mondays at 1 pm at the Beauvoir Arms, Downham, Essex. We’re a small, friendly club of enthusiastic and active volunteers who want to enjoy ourselves and give our time and talents to help others both locally and overseas. The Rotary motto is “Service above Self”, and we are people from all walks of life who share a common interest in helping others.

We were surprised and delighted to welcome District Foundation Chairman Steve Wallbank in his official capacity to present us with three further District Foundation Awards.
He remarked that “your club has already received your award at the Foundation Lunch, for the highest level of donations to End Polio Now of any club in the District (see above). Following the recent Foundation lunch I’m very pleased to be able to visit you in person today and present more awards to recognise your Club’s commitment to Rotary Foundation”:
Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) banner - Every member of our club donates $100 or more every year.
One Hundred Percent Club banner - Every member of the club is qualified as a “Sustaining Member” of The Rotary Foundation by donating $100 or more to it this last year.
Buck’s Bucket - a prestigious award of the wine bucket and a bottle of Prosecco, donated by the late PDG Ken Buck to be awarded to the District 1240 Rotary Club which had the highest percentage of sustaining members in the District.
Steve finished by saying “Thank you for your ongoing support for Rotary Foundation and long may it continue”.

Rotary Club of Billericay volunteers helped Buttsbury Primary School RotaKids increase biodiversity at the school by making bird boxes. We assigned ourselves in ones or twos to each of four pairs of children, marking up the wood and hammering in the nails about halfway. Then the children, took over and hammered the nails home. We repeated the process until all the bird boxes were complete, with Mr Tweedie cutting felt to act as a hinge for the top.
Soon enough, all the boxes were complete, and the children proudly showed off the fruits of their work. Time for group photographs and … welcome coffee and cake for us helpers, and the children. Mr Graves gave the children the option of going out to “break” with their friends, or having some cake. No surprise there – all the children voted to stay in the room and have some cake!
Well done everybody!

15 club members went along to the Billericay Theatre for “A Barbra Streisand and Friends” tribute performed by Keeley Smith for a social event..
Keeley is a talented singer who has performed at venues across the world including the London Palladium, starting her career when she starred in a new TV show - Starstruck.
The show was excellent. There were clearly some people who knew Barbra Streisand but were not that familiar with her songs, then there were Barbra Streisand aficionados who seemed to know every song Keeley sang, then there were others who were fans of Keeley and had come along especially for her, and had obviously been to many others of her shows.
The first half comprised only Barbra Streisand songs and Keeley is clearly very talented, everybody enjoying the show as she “belted” out one song after another. Then there was time for a break
The second half was very similar, but with Keeley interspersing the performances with songs by other artists who were friends of Barbra, and with anecdotes about them and Barbra Streisand. There was even one couple who got up to dance during one of the songs!
A most enjoyable outing.

Eleven Rotary Club of Billericay members and partners attended the annual Rotary District 1240 Foundation Lunch where we celebrated those Rotary clubs which have done the most to support The Rotary Foundation, and its End Polio Now campaign. Our club walked away with the award for highest donations to End Polio Now in the Rotary Year 2024-25 (the End Polio Now - Countdown to History Certificate) which Immediate Past President Patrick Rothon accepted on our behalf because they were won in his Presidential year:
Keynote Speaker was Judith Diment MBE, who talked about her work and that of Rotary’s Polio Eradication initiatives.
Rotary had started its anti-Polio work in 1985 when there were 1,000 cases per day across the world in 125 countries. Polio is now endemic in only two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, where there were only 44 cases last year - a 50% reduction from the previous year. In 2026 there have been NO case so far this year! Five of the six WHO regions are polio free, and of the three wild viruses, two have been eliminated and only one, type 1, remains.
The event was in support of The Rotary Foundation’s End Polio Now and has raised approximately £800 for the Rotary Foundation.

Darting About - Twenty-two members of the Rotary Club of Billericay, friends and partners met at the Nags Head in Ramsden Heath for a social evening together with the objective (supposedly) Darts! While some passed the time in conversation, the keen ones amongst us threw a few darts to start the evening off even if a family group sitting in the room behind the Darts board, speedily moved tables and away from danger when we started throwing darts! The real business of the evening was a pairs competition. Each member of a team throwing in turn and each team alternating. Nearest the “bullseye” to start, and a double to win. It was very clear who had thrown darts before! And who had not!
A Buffet supper, and then ending with everybody having three darts to score the highest amount and win a bottle

Rotary Club of Billericay has been planting 4,000 purple crocus corms every year for 5 years starting from late 2021 in support of Rotary’s “End Polio Now” effort in the U.K.
In November 2025 we worked with the RotaKids of Buttsbury Primary School to plant another 4,000 purple crocus corms at its Junior School site on the lawn at the main entrance to the school buildings.
We were not disappointed with the result. Although the crocuses were slow to appear a purple carpet of glorious crocuses greeted us when we arrived in March 2026. There were beautiful Crocuses everywhere

In November 2024 we planted a further 4,000 in the lawn outside Radstocks apartment block on Stock Road, where many passers-by will see them. The result - a great success with a beautiful display in the Spring of 2024.
Returning to the scene in February 2026, we were again delighted with the display of crocuses on show. What a glorious sight for the hundreds heading to, or from, Billericay Station.

Rotary Club of Billericay has been planting 4,000 purple crocus corms every year for 5 years starting from late 2021 in support of Rotary’s “End Polio Now” effort in the U.K.
In November 2023 we planted a further 4,000 around the Billericay sign at the corner of Stock Road and Potash Road. It was hard work but it only took us less than an hour to complete the planting of the whole 4,000 crocus corms. The result - a great success with a beautiful display in the Spring of 2024.
Returning to the scene in February 2026, we were again delighted with the display of crocuses on show. This continues to be a tremendous success as can be seen in these photos.

Rotary Club of Billericay has been planting 4,000 purple crocus corms every year for 5 years starting from when we supported Christ Church Billericay in planting the crocuses around the Church grounds in late 2021 as part of Rotary’s “End Polio Now” effort in the U.K.
In 2022 we planted a further 4,000 around the Billericay sign on the Green at the London Road end of Mountnessing Road so visitors entering Billericay via London Road would be greeted by the sight of thousands of purple crocuses, interspersed with yellow daffodils planted in the years before. 2026’s flowering is unfortunately not as good this year, and many seem to have been overrun by the host of daffodils which have also been planted around the sign. Even so, there is a long column of crocuses in one position, and several good bunches of crocuses flowering in all their glory.
