Great news 👏

Construction of our purpose-built Maggie's Cambridge has officially started! 🔨

The centre, designed by renowned architect Níall McLaughlin, is being built on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, alongside Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the future Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital, ensuring that we can support even more people facing cancer, as well as their family and friends, across Cambridgeshire.

The centre’s garden, designed by Tom Stuart-Smith Studio, will incorporate elements of their 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal-winning garden, created with support from National Garden Scheme.

Our Chief Executive, Dame Laura Lee DBE, shares the impact that our new centre will have: “It’s wonderful to have an official ceremony today to mark the groundbreaking of our new purpose-built centre in Cambridge.

“We have been supporting people facing a cancer diagnosis from across Cambridgeshire for 14 years, but our beautiful new purpose-built centre means we will have more space to support even more people impacted by cancer.

“Of course, visitors to our centre and the wider Cambridge Biomedical Campus will also be able to enjoy a stunning garden designed by Tom Stuart-Smith.

“Our centre will be open to anyone who needs it, with all our support free and no appointment or referral being necessary.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust to ensure we reach as many people across the region as possible. I would also like to thank everyone who has made the new centre possible and who give towards the cost of running our programme of support.”

NEWS: People with localised prostate cancer could benefit from advanced radiotherapy as an alternative to surgery while maintaining long-term cancer control.

Eight-year follow-up data from the PACE-A study, led by The Royal Marsden and The Institute of Cancer Research, suggests that five sessions of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) may be just as effective as radical prostatectomy for long-term disease control.

Treatment decisions about localised prostate cancer are often informed by concerns about the potential long-term impact on the patient’s urinary, bowel, and sexual function. These results may help patients and clinicians make more informed decisions regarding quality of life when choosing treatment.

Ken, 76, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017. After meeting with a surgeon to discuss the possibility of a prostatectomy, he asked for a referral to seek a second opinion with Professor van As at The Royal Marsden.

"I’ve always lived a very active life, and I hoped to choose a treatment that would allow me to continue that." he said.

"I had heard about SBRT and was very keen to explore it. After speaking with Professor van As, I felt grateful for the opportunity to be considered for the trial, and even more so when I was selected.

"I underwent five sessions of radiotherapy and, before long, my PSA levels began to drop steadily until they were negligible. They have remained that way ever since. Even better, the side effects have been very limited. I highly recommend and uphold the treatment.”
