CLYDESDALE SPORTS PERSONALITY & TEAM OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2025
Service to Sport
George Reid (Football)

For many years Sportscotland, in partnership with the Scottish Club Sport, has been active in presenting annual Service to Sport Awards.

This year the Sports Council is recognising an outstanding individual who has both served his sport and our community with tremendous dedication for decades.

The award goes to a man who has dedicated much of his life to Football.

He has been truly committed to the sport and one club within Clydesdale for over 40 years.

The Sports Council would like to honour his dedication and outstanding commitment to Lanark United Football Club.

Our winner has been part of the Lanark United family since 1964.

Firstly, supporting the team as a young Lanark lad, attending all the games with his grandfather Jimmy, who was the Club’s Treasurer at the time.

Even at a very young age, Jimmy started to get his Grandson’s helping with selling raffle tickets at the games.

After years of attending matches as a supporter, he was approached to join the committee in 1995, which has gratefully accepted.

He has carried out various crucial roles within the committee, which ensures the smooth running of any club, working tirelessly to make sure the club was in the best place both on and off the pitch as it could possibly be.

He became the Vice President in 1997, and then the Club President in 2012, a role which he continues to hold and is extremely proud to do so.

In addition, he currently undertakes the positions of treasurer, groundsman, kitman and linesman. An unbelievable commitment, with countless voluntary hours dedicated over a large period.

He believes he has gained lots of knowledge, experience and learning from everyone he has worked with over the years and continues to have an open-minded approach whilst leading from the front.

Everyone at the club thinks the world of him and can’t thank him enough for the decades of dedication and commitment he has given to his beloved Lanark United.

He’s witnessed some great times and successes for the club but also been there through the more challenging times too.

He really is Mr Lanark United.

The award was presented by Liza Linton, National Development Manager from Scottish ClubSport.

Club of the Year
Kick Mental Health

Our Club of the Year is a dynamic organisation based in Clydesdale and across central Scotland, that uses the universal language of football to combat poor mental health and help transform lives.

By combining the power of sport with mental health support, they provide a safe and inclusive space of individuals to build confidence, foster connections and improve their overall wellbeing.

Their programs focus on more than just football - they promote physical activity, teamwork, and a sense of community while raising awareness of mental health challenges and breaking down stigmas.

Through tailored activities, regular football sessions, and peer support, they help participants develop coping strategies, build resilience, and feel empowered to tackle life's challenges.

The organisation believes in the power of sport to inspire change and create lasting positive impacts.

Together, they’re not just playing football – the group are kicking down barriers, building brighter futures and preventing su***de.

In 2025 they ran sessions and activities to over 2,500 people within our area and the wider central Scotland.

The award was presented by Patrick Murphy, Communities & Education Manager from South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture.

CLYDESDALE SPORTS PERSONALITY & TEAM OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2025
Clydesdale Schools Cup
Carluke High School

Almost, four years ago, South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture’s Active Schools Team within the Clydesdale area, worked closely with the four Headteachers of Biggar High School, Carluke High School, Lanark Grammar School and Lesmahagow High School to pitch a new idea - a multi-sport event for S1 and S2 pupils.

Teams from each school would come together four times throughout the year to compete.

Boys’ Rugby and Girls’ Netball in Biggar; Badminton and Table Tennis in Lanark; Boys’ and Girls’ Football in Lesmahagow, and Athletics in Carluke.

There would be no individual awards or prizes for any event, instead all results would add each schools’ overall tally to reach an overall winner.

Every point and every position would count so that Pupils stay engaged throughout, even if up against stronger athletes.

At its heart, and the main ethos, our Active Schools team wanted to reengage young people in sport and physical activity after the pandemic, offering young people the opportunity to represent their school in a fun and safe environment, and give the opportunity for pupils and PE staff to come together on a regular basis across Clydesdale.

The Clydesdale Secondary School Headteachers continue to love the concept.

There has been continued brilliant support from the PE Departments of all four schools and the Active Schools Team, we also owe a debt of huge gratitude to the Clydesdale Sports Council for their input throughout.

The Sports Council also loved the concept, and they provided that crucial initial injection of funds to allow the schools to purchase strips and kit so young people really feel the part when representing their schools.

Best of all, the financial support has ensured the sustainability of the Clydesdale Schools’ Cup for the next few years.

Another huge positive, is we now see this Secondary inter School competition format take place across the other three areas of South Lanarkshire, due to the success of the Clydesdale model. Where Clydesdale leads, others follow!

Following an excellent year of healthy competition, our winners of the Clydesdale Schools Cup are Carluke High School.

The award was presented by David Strachan, Chairman of Clydesdale Sports Council.

Young Volunteer of the Year
Harley Cu***ng (Taekwondo)

Our Young Volunteer of the Year has made an incredible contribution to the sport of Taekwondo.

He is one of his club’s most dependable and influential volunteers, giving up a substantial amount of his own time to support classes, competitions, gradings, camps and fundraising events.

He assists instructors during weekly sessions, and ensures the students receive individual attention.

One of his most significant contributions has been his work with students with additional support needs.

He adapts his communication and approach to enable the young people to succeed in an environment where they feel understood and supported.

He has also contributed to the development of club programmes, helping shape how sessions are delivered and how progression is supported across different ages and stages.

At competitions, he is an invaluable support to athletes, acting as a coach, mentor and role model.

He is a highly respected figure within the club, and an inspiration to both participants and fellow volunteers.

His professionalism, attitude and work ethic set the standard for others to follow.

The award was presented by Derek Howitt, from the Clydesdale Active Schools Team.

CLYDESDALE SPORTS PERSONALITY & TEAM OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2025
Volunteer of the Year
Vicki Kennedy & Gail Ramsay (Netball)

Our Volunteer of the Year winners are a duo, who are exceptional volunteers whose dedication, professionalism and leadership have been fundamental to the continued success and stability of Clydesdale Netball Club over the past year.

They were parents who stepped forward to take on the demanding role of Joint Chair, ensuring that the club continued to operate to the highest standards.

Taking on this responsibility during a time of change required commitment, resilience and a deep understanding of both the sport and the people involved.
Their role encompasses a vast and complex range of responsibilities.

They provide consistent support to the coaching team, ensuring all Club compliance, and actively encourage and facilitate the completion of new coaching and umpiring qualifications among club members.

They have inspired and supported new parent volunteers, growing the numbers of helping hands. And done so by providing guidance, reassurance and advice and by simply being there for anyone that needs them.

A helping hand, a sympathetic ear but with a steely focus on good governance and organisations has meant this dynamic duo have also been hugely impactful at association meetings and the wider governance of the game.

Everyone at the Club thinks very highly of them and appreciates everything they do.

The award was presented by Steven Percy, Club & Communities Senior from South Lanarkshire Leisure & Culture.

Lorna Ferguson (Taekwondo)

Our Coach of the Year is from the Sport of Taekwondo.

During 2025 she has undertaken extensive coaching across a wide range of programmes, playing a central role in the development, growth and success of Pro-Edge Carluke.

She delivered weekly coaching to children aged 3–12 across Little Heroes and Super Heroes classes, as well as leading the club’s Inclusive Heroes programme for children with additional support needs.

In addition, she mentored young volunteer instructors, supporting their development in leadership, confidence and safeguarding practice.

She also organised and delivered gradings, interclubs, camps, awards nights and community events, strengthening club culture, retention and engagement.

She is a strong role model to her Students, maintaining a clear focus on the wellbeing, enjoyment and positive behaviour, ensuring a safe, supportive and inclusive environment.

She works closely with parents and carers to support individual needs, confidence and long-term development of all her Students.

Sporting Secondary School of the Year
Biggar High School

In addition to providing outstanding additional sport and physical activity opportunities in partnership with Active Schools, the defining moment of the year for our Sporting Secondary School of the Year, was undoubtedly the South Lanarkshire County Sports.

Despite being the smallest of the 17 competing secondary schools, this school’s athletes defied the odds to dominate the competition.

Their students secured an impressive array of medals across track and field events, a collective effort that resulted in the school winning the prestigious South Lanarkshire Schools Shield for the highest overall score.

This victory stands as a testament to the incredible dedication and talent density within their student body.

This culture of excellence extends far beyond the athletics track.

On the court, their Senior Girls were crowned champions of the Clydesdale Netball Cup, while their rugby programme saw both S1 and S2 Boys and Girls squads qualify for the SPEN Championship Finals.

Their endurance athletes also excelled at the SL Cross Country Championships, securing Team Bronze medals in both the 2nd Year Girls and 3rd Year Boys categories.

Small Sporting Primary School of the Year
Carstairs Junction Primary School

Our Small Sporting Primary School of the Year has demonstrated a strong and sustained commitment to sport, physical activity, inclusion, and student wellbeing across the whole school community.

This is driven by staff who actively engage in ongoing professional learning and coach education along with great partnership working with Active Schools, to ensure their pupils get the best possible sporting opportunities including inclusive lunchtime clubs and meaningful participation for pupils with additional support needs. They work hard to remove barriers with creativity, passion and care.

Moreover, the school introduced a Dance Club in 2025, with 2026 marking the first year that pupils will participate in the Dance Festival at Lanark Memorial Hall.

Community means so much to this school and through strong partnerships they achieve even more. A collaboration with Healthy Valleys has enabled the delivery of a bespoke cycling programme to support children who were unable to cycle independently.

In 2025 they came position 88 out of 844 small schools in the UK with 80.96% of their pupils walking, wheeling, scooting or cycling to school, as part of the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel and have also achieved their Cycling Friendly School Status.

The school has achieved the Sport Scotland Silver Award with clear plans in place to achieve Gold Award status driven forward by an active Sports Committee that empowers pupils to make even more improvements.
