What you missed last month.

July was a busy one across TownSq. Awards, fundraising, expos, podcasts, Pilates, networking and plenty of reasons to get people together.

At Shell Store, Hereford, there was lots to celebrate. The team were named finalists in the Herefordshire Tourism Awards in the Business Events Venue category, raised an incredible Β£1,430 for local charity Yeleni by taking on Tough Mudder, and we also announced that our very own Danielle Dunn will be the new host of Ladies Lunch.

At The Track in Bognor Regis, John Parsons joined us for a workshop exploring Teal vs Hierarchy and different ways of thinking about modern business structures. We also welcomed Cordelia Worsley from Aldwick Pilates for a Pilates session - a slightly calmer way to spend some time at The Track.

At Perch in Bicester, the Eco Summer Business Expo was a huge success, bringing together local businesses, exhibitors and visitors for networking, guest speakers, professional headshots and even a F1 racing simulator.

July also saw the launch of the new Bicester Business Collective Podcast, sharing the stories, challenges and successes of local business owners, while the Elmsbrook AGM brought the wider community together for an evening of updates, live music and a pop-up pub.

At Town Hall in Tunbridge Wells, our resident artists wrapped up their final class of the year, while Theo kept everyone well fed with some rather lovely catering in the TownSq coffee shop.

And, as always, plenty has been happening online too through https://zurl.co/1RNuz and our network of hubs in Barnstaple, Caerphilly, Crewe and Kingston.

Whatever you’re doing this summer, if you’re looking to escape the work-from-home, we’re here.

One thing we hear again and again from our members: how much less isolated they feel since joining TownSq.

It's not just a nice feeling either - our Impact Report found that 45% of members said moving into a TownSq space reduced that sense of isolation.
And that matters more than people realise.

Isolation can slow down decisions, narrow your perspective, and make everything feel harder than it should.

Being in the right environment brings conversation, challenge and support back into your everyday, and that's what helps businesses truly move forward.

Ever joined somewhere for one reason and stayed for a completely different one?

That's TownSq for a lot of our members. They come for the space - the desks, the meeting rooms, the flexibility. But what keeps them here is the staff who know their name, the friendly faces in the kitchen, the little chats that turn a normal Tuesday into a good one.

Great workspace gets you through the door. Community is what keeps you there.

Come see what we mean πŸ‘‰ https://zurl.co/6nyqt

Confidence in business rarely comes from having all the answers.

It comes from being around people who've faced similar challenges, made tough decisions, and kept going anyway.

Our Impact Report found that 28% of members feel more confident since joining TownSq - and it's something we see time and time again across our spaces.

When isolation reduces, clarity improves. And with clarity comes more decisive action.

That's where real confidence starts to build.

Nobody claps for Tuesday afternoons.

But honestly? That's where most of building a business actually happens. Not the big win, not the headline moment, just clearing the inbox, making a few calls, moving three things forward, and going to bed tired.

Nobody writes the post that says "it was a quiet couple of years and I just kept showing up." But talk to any business owner about how they really got anywhere, and that's usually the truth of it.

Here's a stat that puts it in perspective: the average UK company is just nine years old, and only 1 in 9 make it past twenty (ONS data, link below). Not because of some big lucky break, because of hundreds of ordinary days where someone simply didn't stop.

So if today was just an "inbox and phone calls" kind of day, that counts. That's the job. That's what keeps things moving.

And if it feels like there's a new challenge round every corner lately, we hear you. It's a genuinely tough climate right now. But you don't have to do it on your own.

If you fancy a check-in with another business owner, or just a change of scenery from your usual desk, we're here.

Online and in person, you're always welcome in our TownSq.

Some workspaces you tolerate. TownSq is one you actually look forward to.

Our members say it's the welcome that gets them, the people that keep them, and the atmosphere that makes even a long to-do list feel manageable.

You can get your head down and still have a laugh with the people around you, and honestly, that combination is rare.

Come try a day for yourself at https://zurl.co/soHbN

We've been thinking about something important lately: what does a town actually need to help its local businesses succeed?

Not what people say they want, but what really makes the difference between a business that grows and one that struggles despite all the hard work.

Turns out, it's rarely one thing. It's having the right space, the right events, the right people around you, and support that turns up exactly when you need it (sometimes before you even realise it!).

That's exactly what the old town square used to do - bring people, business and community together naturally. It's the whole idea behind TownSq.

Some of the best things that have happened in our spaces were never planned. A casual coworking chat that turned into a partnership. A networking evening where someone met their first investor. A quick chat that changed someone's whole approach to their business.

We'd love to hear from our members! We're putting together a series celebrating the people who've grown with us and the impact TownSq has had on their journey.

Working alone feels great... at first. πŸ˜…

No open-plan office, no pointless meetings, just you and your work. Honestly? Bliss.

Then somewhere around the six or twelve month mark, something changes. The days start to blur together. Your inbox becomes your main form of conversation. And you realise you can't remember the last time you had a spontaneous chat with another person during the working day.

Nothing's wrong exactly, that's just what working alone looks like once the novelty wears off.

We've been researching what the world's best innovation spaces have in common, and one idea kept coming up again and again: "collisionable hours." It's the time people spend in shared spaces where chance encounters happen, a casual chat that turns into a collaboration, a question over coffee that unsticks a problem you've been wrestling with for weeks, bumping into someone who knows exactly the person you need to meet.

None of that happens at home. And for freelancers doing brilliant work solo, it's often exactly what's missing.

Isolation is one of the least talked-about costs of freelance life, but it takes a real toll on creativity, confidence, and the kind of thinking that only happens around other people.

It's a big part of why we build TownSq around connection, not just desks.

Does marketing your business feel like a full-time job of posting, posting, and more posting? πŸ˜…

Here's some good news - it doesn't have to.

Join Kevin Mansell-Abell for a practical online workshop on 7 creative ways to market your business without relying on social media, using the tools, relationships and opportunities already around you.

You'll explore:
βœ… Understanding your audience more clearly
βœ… Sharpening your offer
βœ… Using content more purposefully
βœ… Building partnerships
βœ… Making email work harder
βœ… Finding local opportunities
βœ… Getting more from your existing customer relationships

We want to know: if you could ditch one marketing task forever, what would it be? Tell us in the comments πŸ‘‡

A great session for anyone who wants their marketing to feel more focused and consistent - without feeling chained to Meta.

The average Briton spends 65 minutes a day commuting. πŸš†

That's roughly 10 bank holidays' worth of time, every year. For decades, we just accepted it as the cost of having a job.

Hybrid working cracked that open. But the conversation's stuck on "how many days in the office", when there's a better question underneath:
What if work was close enough to walk to?

Not working from home, not the daily trek into a city centre, something in between. A workspace in your own community, where you show up, collaborate, and actually feel part of the place you live.

Our Boot-the-Commute campaign has been asking this since 2020. Less commuting means more time, money and energy flowing back into local high streets, local businesses and local lives.

It's a 10-minute read, arguably shorter than your commute. πŸ˜‰
