“Our old house was fragile, built from sticks and mud, and we constantly feared theft and kidnappers. In contrast, our new house is well-protected and gives us peace of mind - we can finally sleep safely inside.”

Decades of conflict, climate shocks, and poverty have left millions of people across Somalia in need of humanitarian assistance.

Adan and Fartun are a young married couple, and for a time their future was uncertain. Rising living costs in Somalia placed enormous pressure on their limited income, and eventually the pair could no longer afford to pay rent. With nowhere else to go, the two settled in a displacement camp where they lived in a poorly constructed shelter that offered little protection.

Through our partnership with Juba Foundation, families like Adan and Fartun's have received safer shelter, land tenure agreements, and essential household items to help them rebuild their lives.

Speaking to the couple after receiving support, they say: “Our heartfelt thanks go to Juba Foundation and ShelterBox for constructing this house and providing us with blankets, utensils, and other necessities... Today, we are happily married and living in a safe home. With more support, we can improve our house and create a better future."

“If we had not been selected, we may never have known what Rotary was, or what it could offer.”

For two young people in Newport, South Wales, being selected for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) opened the doors to what was to become a much bigger journey for them both ✨

RYLA has been part of Rotary's youth programme for decades, helping young people develop confidence, leadership, communication and teamwork through residential courses and practical challenges. For many participants, it is also their first introduction to Rotary itself.

Now active Rotaractors, Joseph Krzyzek and Anastasiia Kolotusha have joined other young people to establish the Rotaract Club of Newport Uskmouth. Read their inspiring story and watch the video they made that highlights the opportunities that Rotary offers for young people 🙌
