A pragmatic approach to sustainability is shaping UK manufacturing SMEs

Joanna Morris, Head of Insight at Novuna Business Finance, writes, "Manufacturing SMEs are operating in an environment defined by rising costs, supply chain uncertainty and geopolitical instability. Yet despite these pressures, sustainability is becoming more embedded in how these businesses operate.

"Compared with 2019, when net zero targets were first introduced, 36% of manufacturing SMEs say they now undertake more sustainability-related activity in their day-to-day operations — the highest across any sector. A further 22% say sustainability is now more strategically embedded in their business culture, supported by clearer planning and internal processes.

Birmingham’s Orchestra knows exactly who it’s for
Emma Stenning, Chief Executive, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), writes, "There was really only ever one piece that could mark this orchestra’s connection to one of our county’s most celebrated composers in the year that marks 50 years since his death – Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, written for the consecration of the newly rebuilt Coventry Cathedral, and premiered there by the CBSO in 1962, when the memories of war were still frighteningly real.

"It’s music that remains in the DNA of the orchestra, and onNovember 11th — Remembrance Day — the CBSO will perform it once again at Coventry Cathedral. "

Almost 1 in 4 child safeguarding conversations happen after 10pm

Nine months of operational data from six UK schools reveals that children reach out for safeguarding support overwhelmingly outside school hours. The findings are published as the government consultation on AI chatbot age restrictions closes on Monday.

Quinly, a purpose-built safeguarding tool used in six UK schools, has published the first operational dataset of its kind from a UK school deployment. The data covers 4,400+ safeguarding conversations recorded between July 2025 and April 2026, and reveals a pattern that holds across the full nine months: children reach out for help overwhelmingly during the hours when no teacher, counsellor or pastoral lead is there to answer.

Organisations must rethink learning as skills demand rapidly evolves
Shifting skill demands driven by digitalisation and tech advancements are challenging traditional training models, says Ella Puoliväli from Aalto University Executive Education and Professional Development (Aalto EE).

Rapid changes in the world of work are forcing organisations to rethink how they develop skills, with new insights showing that learning must be embedded across every level of the business, not as a standalone function.

More than half of adoptive families negatively affected by government cuts to therapeutic funding

Cuts to the Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund (ASGSF) introduced last April, are impacting thousands of families through reduced or abruptly ended therapeutic support.

New early findings from a major survey of those impacted by adoption, the Adoption Barometer 2026, to be published in June, show that more than half of respondents have been negatively affected by the 40% reduction to the fund. Alarmingly, the worst affected were the families with the highest level of need.
