Britain’s worst manufacturing apprenticeship intake in a decade?

Competition for technical and degree apprenticeships is surging, but Yorkshire-based steelwork manufacturer Tadweld is warning that the growing demand for technical careers is being met with a shrinking number of opportunities in manufacturing.

Recent figures reported by the BBC show applications for degree apprenticeships through the Government’s central platform have risen from 8,100 to 21,800 in just three years, while available positions have almost halved from 7,300 to 3,700.

Against this backdrop, Tadweld says its September 2026 Level 3 engineering apprenticeship intake is set to be its lowest in a decade, reflecting a wider concern that rising employment costs are making it increasingly difficult for SMEs to provide the hands-on training needed to build Britain’s future skilled workforce.

The savings habit that could leave your child £28,000 better off

From university costs and driving lessons to helping with a first home deposit, many parents want to give their children a financial head start. But with household budgets stretched, knowing how much to save can feel overwhelming, as Google searches for “financial support” have risen by 21% over August 2026.

Research from Yorkshire Building Society found that parents who financially support key life milestones contribute just over £28,000 on average throughout their child’s early adulthood.

Meet Ewelina Zawierucha: The mum helping families find the magic in mealtimes

Mum to two children, aged 19 and 15, Ewelina Zawierucha is the Founder of Cooking with Magic and a Thermomix® Team Leader, combining her love of food, people and teaching to help busy families make cooking from scratch simpler, more affordable and more enjoyable.

Ewelina spent more than 10 years as a primary school teacher in Leeds, having previously worked as a Senior Montessori Teacher in London and as an English as a foreign language teacher in Poland. But, during the Covid pandemic, a new chapter began… while families were stuck at home, Ewelina started hosting online Thermomix® cooking demonstrations, quickly discovering just how much people enjoyed learning, cooking and connecting together. She reduced her teaching hours, and in 2021 made the decision to leave teaching altogether and focus on her growing cooking business.

Small Lights, Big Comfort: Why I Started Little Lanterns Project

I’m Danielle Mavin, the founder of Little Lanterns Project, a growing initiative supporting children and families facing difficult circumstances across the UK and internationally.

I started Little Lanterns because I wanted to create something that could make a meaningful difference to children who might be experiencing hardship, illness, displacement or other difficult circumstances. Sometimes something as simple as a new toy, a comforting blanket, creative materials or the opportunity to continue learning can make a difference to a child’s day.

Little Lanterns is about bringing together those small acts of kindness and turning them into practical support.
