Local government staff keep communities safe, clean and accessible, often for little to no recognition.
Within our 2024 claim, we asked the employers for a pay increase of £3,000 or 10%, whichever was greater. The offer of £1,290 falls far short of this.*

Following a consultation of member, our NJC committee, made up of leading activists, decided that we would proceed with an industrial action ballot.

The ballot opened on Wednesday 4 September and closes at 10:00 on Wednesday 16 October.

Look out for your purple envelope.

You have just two weeks to cast your vote in UNISON’s industrial action ballot over fair pay for council and school workers in England and Wales.

Please make sure you have your say on pay and post back your ballot so it arrives by 4 July.

You should have received your branded red envelope containing your all-important ballot papers. If you have not received your ballot paper yet, please log onto MyUNISON to request a replacement ballot paper or call our helpline on 0800 0 857 857 and a replacement can be requested from the team. (Please note that replacement ballot papers can be requested until midday on 28 June.)

Every single vote matters. Once again, we’re up against restrictive anti-trade union laws that means we need at least a 50% turnout in your employer, and a big ‘yes’ vote, to take strike action. I know it’s a difficult decision to vote to take action especially when you do such a valuable job that people rely on. But the vital public services you provide means that you deserve to be paid fairly.

The value of school and local government pay has fallen by 25% in real terms since 2010. The 2023 below-inflation pay offer from the employers goes nowhere near to making up for it, or to dealing with the rising cost of living. In fact, it represents another attempt at managed decline of pay in councils and schools.

So please, have your say and post your ballot paper back so that it's received by Tuesday 4 July.

UNISON, GMB and Unite the union are the only recognised unions for support staff. They are the only unions that have a recognition agreement with the Local Authority and are the only unions that can negotiate with the Authority on support staff’s terms and conditions of contract which includes pay.

No other unions have this agreement and will not be able to collectively bargain with the Authority on any of your Terms and Conditions.

NJC 2023 pay claim for support staff is currently on-going and only members in the above unions will have a VOTE.
