TCAT state the school is safe. Our members know what it's actually like on the ground.

'In response to the statement, Scott said: "If members at Hessle Penshurt believe that, there wouldn't be 15 teachers out on strike today.'

East Riding NEU are pleased to support the Ruth Strauss foundation who support families where a parent is facing an incurable cancer. Their new Schools Training Programme builds on that expertise and our experience working with families, but goes wider – ensuring it is suitable for any cause of grief and bereavement, including preparation for bereavement. The training programme equips school staff with the skills and confidence to support students through anticipatory grief and bereavement. Here is a link to the fully accredited online CPD course which members can access for free, and complete at a time to suit them.

And conference 2026 is done. 41 motions, 29 hours sat in the conference hall, 2 excellent East Riding speeches and 12 hours of travelling. Thanks to the 8 delegates who have given up the first week of their Easter to shape NEU policy and save the future of education!

The time to save education is now. We are not going to wait for permission, we are going to lead, because that is what the NEU does!

Stop the Agency Rip-Off

Commenting on the passing of Motion 32 at NEU Annual Conference in Brighton, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:

"The supply sector is now a watchword for some of the worst examples of profiteering and corporate greed in education. We cannot accept a system in which public money is siphoned off by supply agencies – some of which are headquartered in tax havens – while supply educators are routinely paid a pittance for the vital work they do, without any access to sectoral pension schemes.

"There is a fair solution at hand and we will not hesitate to put pressure on the government as well as education employers to grasp it. The extension of national pay rates to all supply staff whatever their contractual status and the creation of supply pools at employer level would be precisely that solution. It would take only the stroke of a pen for the government to guarantee fair pay for supply educators and it is shameful that they have sought to prop up a failing private system. We will continue to campaign at every level for an end to the agency rip off, using our collective strength to win the creation of public alternatives that provide the pay and pension entitlements that supply educators deserve."

Towards a liberatory curriculum and transformative pedagogy

Commenting on the passing of Motion 12 at NEU Annual Conference in Brighton, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:

"A truly modern national curriculum must be broad, inclusive and relevant, enabling every young person to thrive in today’s diverse Britain. Reforms that promote a broad and balanced curriculum are welcome, but they can only be realised if new programmes of study are co-created with teachers, with opportunities for young people to develop essential skills for life and work.

"The government’s Curriculum and Assessment Review missed the opportunity to review the burden of testing which create an ‘exam factory’ culture and distort teaching and learning. Instead, our education system should recognise and nurture the progress of every child. Students must see their background, interests and experiences reflected in what they learn, helping them to develop confidence and a strong sense of belonging”.

End academisation, bring back local control

Commenting on the passing of Motion 37 at NEU Annual Conference in Brighton, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:

"The NEU is opposed to forced academisation and any plans to further academise the sector.

"The marketisation and privatisation of schools through academisation is a costly and hugely disruptive policy that the system can ill afford. Schools are already running on empty.

"Further academisation is also not the answer to drive school improvement and collaboration. It risks the opposite: more competition and more fragmentation. The Government must preserve and strengthen maintained schools as a core part of our education system. They must also learn from, and champion, the many successful partnerships that local-authority schools are a part of that support schools to learn from each other and drive a self-improving system."

Online Balloting Now

Commenting on the passing of Motion 41 at NEU Annual Conference in Brighton, Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said:

"Conference has sent a clear message that trade union members must be able to vote online in trade union ballots – and the Government must act now.

"Members are still forced to use postal ballots that belong in the last century to meet legal thresholds designed to suppress participation and weaken the voice of working people.

"Electronic balloting would be safe, increase turnout and shorten ballot periods. Party leadership elections are already held online – yet the right to strike still relies on envelopes and stamps.

"The Government has rightly promised electronic balloting from August this year. The NEU will not accept further delays. We will hold the Government to their commitment."
