We keep a listening watch on the VHF marine distress channel 16 and liaise with the Humber Coastguard Operations Centre. We provide advice and information to visitors using the beaches and walking the coast path. We also carry out mobile patrols, who will visually check for signs of further cliff erosion, checking any safety equipment is useable and periodically pick up the ever increasing amounts

of plastic rubbish found on the beaches. Other environmental activities include monitoring and data collection for Northumberland Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority and also watching for and reporting Cetacean activity to the Sea Watch Foundation. Berwick Coastwatch is a member of the Sea Safety Group which is an association of independent Coastwatch stations and provides representation for the member stations at national level. All funds raised by Berwick Coastwatch are used to maintain and equip the lookout tower and to provide a service to the local community. โš ๏ธ REPORT OF QUICKSAND โš ๏ธ

Please be advised that we have received a report of quicksand at Cocklawburn Beach today.

Quicksand and soft mud can look solid but may quickly give way beneath your feet, trapping you within seconds. Coastal conditions are constantly changing due to tides, weather, rainfall, and shifting sandbanks, meaning areas of quicksand can appear, disappear, or move location over time โ€” even in places that may have seemed safe before.

Incoming tides can then turn a difficult situation into a life-threatening emergency very quickly.

Safety advice:

โ€ข Avoid walking across unfamiliar mudflats or estuaries
โ€ข Keep to recognised paths and coastal routes
โ€ข Never assume an area is safe because you have walked there before
โ€ข Never attempt to rescue someone yourself if they become stuck
โ€ข Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard immediately

If you do become stuck:

โ€ข Stay calm
โ€ข Spread your weight as much as possible
โ€ข Avoid sudden movements
โ€ข Try to slowly ease your legs free
โ€ข Use anything available to distribute your weight, such as a bag or jacket

As always, If you see someone in difficulty along the coast, cliffs, or in the water: Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

๐Ÿ“Ÿ ALB LAUNCH ALERT ๐Ÿ“Ÿ

005/2026

Yesterday at approximately 06:27am our RNLI Seahouses Lifeboat Station volunteers were awoken by the sound of the pagers buzzing. We were requested to launch on service our Shannon Class All Weather Lifeboat 13-36.

As the crew mustered at station Humber Coastguard provided information that we were required to provide urgent transport for colleagues from North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust to attend a medical emergency on Holy Island.

Due to the tide times the causeway was completely submerged, therefore the only access to provide urgent medical care was by Lifeboat. After a quick transit the Paramedics were safely delivered to the casualty, they provided treatment and following assessment extracted the casualty by land Ambulance once the tide had ebbed and the causeway reopened. We wish the casualty a speedy recovery. ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’™

Unfortunately while returning to station our Lifeboat suffered a mechanical issue resulting in it returning to Harbour and being taken off service. ๐Ÿ”จ๐Ÿ”ง

RNLI Volunteer Duty Launch Authority Bob said; "We respond to a variety of medical emergencies and extractions from Holy Island throughout the year, this was another great example of working hand in hand with our partner agencies"
