The RNLI is a charity that exists to save lives at sea. But recent events have generated deliberate misinformation and a misunderstanding about our purpose and our lifesaving work in the Channel.

As a result, some of our volunteers and staff have been the subject of online and, in some cases, physical abuse. This is unacceptable.

The RNLI’s people represent the very best of society. For over two hundred years they have dedicated themselves to rescuing people they’ve never met before, without judgment, fear or favour.

We are tasked by HM Coastguard to help those in distress, and we'll do so whenever, wherever and whoever they are.

We launched 9,058 times in 2025. Only 109 of those launches were to those in distress in the Channel – 1.2% of our total rescue work. Anyone rescued from a small boat by the RNLI is then taken into the care of the relevant UK authorities.

To those who stand with the RNLI, thank you. For more than two hundred years, we've saved lives at sea around the UK and Ireland, and that commitment remains unchanged.

Yesterday, the Inshore lifeboat Sue launched at 6:33am to perform a search for a missing person, fortunately the person was found ashore.

Later in the day the Inshore lifeboat launched at 5:54pm to a 26 foot Bayliner as it had run aground at Bembridge Ledge. En route, it was reported that casualties were in the water and the All-Weather Albert Alfred Williams launched by 6pm to support.

Once on scene, the All-Weather launched the Y-boat to support the 6 persons on board to shore and handed over to CRT. All casualties were safe and well. Meanwhile, the Inshore lifeboat Sue aided with setting an anchor to the motorboat.

Both the All-Weather and Inshore lifeboat returned to station by 7:15pm.

🛟 August Rescue Round-Up 🛟

On the 2nd August the 📟 pager went off twice for Bembridge RNLI station! At 11:50am All-Weather Alfred Albert Williams launched to investigate a reported loose paddle board which turned out to be a moored platform. All checks were made to ensure there were no paddle boarders in need of help within the vicinity of St Helens fort before rehousing at 1:30pm.

Later in the day, the Inshore lifeboat, Sue launched at approximately 7:45pm to assist a 10m motor boat that was run aground on the edge of Bembridge harbour approach with 2 persons on-board and a dog. After performing a welfare-check, they were happy to stay on-board and an anchor was deployed by Bembridge RNLI. Shortly after, the ILB was returned to station at 8:10pm.

On the 12th August, Inshore lifeboat Sue, launched at 1:39pm to a capsized dinghy in the main shipping channel near the Dean Elbow buoy. As the ILB made its way, an ABP pilot recovered the casualty and a survey boat assisted with the recovery of the dinghy. The ILB was stood down and returned to station at 1:50pm.

A few days later on 17th August HM coastguard requested All-Weather Alfred Albert Williams to assist with a kite-surfer who had reportedly been in the water for 30 minutes and unable to re-fly the kite and began drifting towards Culver Cliff from Yaverland.
Upon arrival to the scene at 7pm, a shoreline search was conducted and the suspected casualty was believed to be ashore. Bembridge RNLI communicated their findings to CRT who checked and confirmed that the person ashore was the kite-surfer. Once confirmed, Bembridge RNLI were stood down and rehoused by 7:40pm.

Tonight we have Sea Gels singing at our Public Launch!
Doors open at 6:30pm, with Pay & Display parking 🅿️ by the lifeboat station.
Both, the All-Weather lifeboat and Inshore Lifeboat will be launched at 7pm!
