NOTICE TO CUSTOMERS

Due to recent incidents including theft and vandalism we have been advised by our insurers to secure the community centre site which will involve locking the gates at the site entrance on Derby Road when the centre has closed. Strutts greatly appreciate the co-operation of all customers in ensuring that vehicles are not left on site in the car park, which is for community centre users only, after the centre has closed, without express written permission from the charity trustees.

Many thanks,
Strutts Community Centre Team

It was great to meet Jonathan Davies MP for Mid Derbyshire at Strutts to explain to him the challenges we face in progressing the restoration of the building. Strutts has survived since 2009, due solely to the efforts of volunteers, and without funding from local authorities our income is derived only from room hire.

It was great to meet with the Guardians of the Strutts at the Strutts Community Centre - the group that runs the Strutts Centre.

After the school was vacated by Derbyshire County Council in 2009, Belper rallied together to make it a community centre that is now used for community groups, businesses, and community meetings.

One of the things I discussed with the Guardians of the Strutts was about how much work needs to be done on the building. Because it is over 100 years old, it has many challenges associated with it.

There is a way to help. The more people that use the building and pay to hold events or meetings there, the more money can be put back into the repairs to ensure its longevity. I am committed to work alongside the Guardians of the Strutts to make sure that we can attract as much money possible to the community centre, and raise the profile of this building so more people use it.

February 1906 - Preparations were still being made for the building of the Herbert Strutt School and Swimming Baths, while questions were raised about whether the baths should be within the school building itself. Elsewhere, Herbert Strutt was in the process of clearing Milford Quarry and laying it out as a recreation ground for the local children, under the supervision of Mr. Pallett, Strutt's head gardener. It would open in the spring of that year, its former disused state is shown in the picture.

Some of the Strutts team had a great visit to meet the trustees of The Old Town Hall at Bourne, who have recently been awarded a substantial grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to turn the building into a community arts and events centre. It was really helpful to exchange ideas and experiences about the re-use of historic buildings for the benefit of the community.
