🔙 T H R O W B A C K T H U R S D A Y 🔙

Last term I said goodbye to a mum who has been to baby classes with me twice and I took a look back to see if I could find the original photos of her and it got me thinking about previous years and I found them. Lots of these mums in this photo are still in touch with each other.

It made me think about what is unique about classes:
✨ Its a space where mums can be honest, open and support one another.
💛 Where I ask, “How has your week been?” and genuinely want the long answer
😂 Where we laugh together, celebrate parenting wins, cry when we need to and never judge. We also talk about things other than parenting too
🤱 For all mums, however motherhood is feeling for you that day.
🫶 A space for you, whatever kind of week you are having
☕️ You get a cuppa and cake at the end too.

And beyond the class itself, mums also have access to:
👭 A WhatsApp group of other baby class mums
👭 A wider community WhatsApp group
👭 Socials and walking meet-ups
👭 Peer support from me (a postnatal doula) and from one another

Because motherhood was never meant to be done alone

So why not come and join us in Hatchlings classes for babies from 6 weeks to 5 months. Classes are on or Thursday afternoon from 1-2pm.

PM the page for more information.

🚽 TODDLER-LED TOILETING WORKSHOP 🚽

Toileting is often treated like something children need to “achieve” on a timeline.

But toileting is developmental, not performance based.

In theToddler-Led Toileting Workshop, we focus on supporting children with connection, confidence and understanding without pressure, shame or unrealistic expectations.

The five key principles we explore are:

✨ Toileting is a developmental stage
✨ Toileting is a normal bodily function
✨ Every child is different
✨ Take the pressure off your child and yourself
✨ Follow your child’s lead

Because children learn best when they feel safe, supported and trusted.

We’ll also cover:
✔️ Signs of readiness
✔️ Supporting independence and body confidence
✔️ Managing accidents calmly and empathetically
✔️ Daytime vs night-time readiness
✔️ Practical tips for starting out and navigating toileting on the go

You’ll leave feeling more informed, more confident, and reassured that you don’t have to navigate this stage alone 💛

💫 Birth Partners & Hypnobirthing 💫

I starting a brand new hypnobirthing course next month and there will be a group of first time parents, and when I teach it always reminds me just how powerful these sessions can be for birth partners.

One of the things I love most about teaching hypnobirthing is the transformation you often see in them.

Many arrive a little unsure. Sometimes slightly sceptical. Often just coming along to support their partner, not really knowing what hypnobirthing is or how it will help.

And then something shifts.
You start to see the light-bulb moments 💡
They begin to understand birth differently.
They realise the role they can play.

Birth partners aren’t just there to “be present”. They can be the calm voice in the room, the person protecting the birthing space, the one reminding their partner of their strength, their choices, and their power.

They become the advocate.
The steady support.
The biggest cheerleader.

Often the greatest source of oxytocin in the room.

By the end of the course, many birth partners who arrived feeling nervous or uncertain leave feeling confident, capable, and genuinely excited to support the birth.

So this one is for the birth partners.
The ones who start off unsure but show up anyway.
The ones who worry they might “get it wrong”.
The ones who quietly step up and become an incredible source of support.

You make such a difference to the birth experience, and it’s always such a privilege to watch that transformation happen. 💛

✨ Pregnant? ✨

If you’re expecting right now and feeling slightly overwhelmed by all the noise around birth… you are definitely not alone.

Between scary headlines, social media opinions, conversations around maternity care, and everyone seeming to have a horror story to share, it can start to feel really heavy when you’re simply trying to enjoy your pregnancy and prepare to meet your baby.

Being informed doesn’t have to mean being fearful ✨

Learning about your options, understanding your rights, and preparing for birth can actually help you feel calmer, more grounded, and more confident as you head towards meeting your baby.

A few gentle reminders I always share with pregnant mamas…

✨ Support matters
Whether it’s a doula, hypnobirthing teacher, trusted midwife or supportive friends around you, having people in your corner can make such a difference.

✨ Learn about your choices
When you understand your options, you’re able to make decisions that feel aligned with you and your baby, rather than decisions rooted in fear or pressure.

✨ Create safety wherever you choose to birth
For some mamas that’s home, for others it’s hospital. Feeling safe, calm and listened to can have such a positive impact on birth.

✨ Prepare your mind as much as your body
Breathwork, hypnobirthing, movement, relaxation and affirmations can really help you feel more connected, calm and supported throughout pregnancy and birth 🤍

✨ Think about postpartum too
The postnatal period deserves just as much love and preparation. Having support around you and allowing yourself to be cared for matters so much.

And most importantly…

Try not to get lost in everyone else’s opinions. Trust yourself.

You know your body. You know your baby. You deserve to feel heard, respected and supported throughout your whole journey ♥️

If this resonated with you, my DMs are always open ✨

Following my socials.

So let me tell you why my clients choose me to guide them through one of the most important days of their lives 👇
🌟 I’m not the cheapest and I don’t pretend to be.
🌟 What I offer is real preparation.
🌟 No fluff, no sugar-coating, just honest, empowering support.
🌟 You’ll leave this course feeling like you are ready to take control of your birth.

For over 12 years, I’ve supported families through this incredible journey and not once has anyone said they regretted the money they have spent preparing for birth.

You don’t need someone to tell you you’ll "open like a flower". 🪷

You need someone who will be in your corner, who will actually prepare you for birth on your terms, who will be honest about the realities of the maternity system and help you feel strong, informed, and ready.

So I have:

Did the midwife/doctor put a hat on your baby when they were first born?

After babies are born in the hospital or in some cases at home, it’s pretty standard for a midwife to put a hat over baby’s head.

But do heathly newborns really need to wear one?
Short answer no, longer answer it depends and the practice can vary depending on the hospital or the NHS trust.

Why does your newborn not need a hat after birth?
🤱🏼 Skin to skin is best: Evidence tells us that skin to skin with your baby is the best way to regulate their temperature. Even if for some reason you are unable to do this your partner can! During skin-to-skin contact, if your baby feels too hot, your body will cool down, and if your baby feels too cold, your body will heat up.

🤱🏼 It interferes with bonding: That delicious new baby smell we get a hit of every time we smell our baby’s heads. From the minute your baby is placed on your chest that bonding begins. A hat can inhibit that.

🤱🏼 Babies wearing a hat indoors or who have their head covered with bedding are at risk of overheating. This then puts them at higher risk of SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome).

🤱🏼 Smelling the baby's head can also enable the mother to maintain the oxytocin bubble and enable the uterus contract and help with the birth of the placenta.

So when does a newborn need a hat?
👒 They may have them on if they are in the NICU (to assist temperature regulation when they are premature/unwell) and away from their parents
👒 Maybe in the theatre following caesarean birth (in a colder environment when immediate skin to skin is still not possible in some hospitals).
👒 If it is cold outside and you are walking around.

Did you know this about hats and newborns?

Gas & Air (Entonox) – A Popular choice for pain relief in labour 💨✨

Gas & Air is one of the most commonly used pain relief options during labour. In hospitals, it’s usually plumbed into the wall, giving unlimited access, while in home birth settings, it comes in large cylinders that can be replaced as needed. The best part? It’s attached to a long tube, so you can move around freely and find comfortable positions while using it. It can be used on its own or alongside other pain relief methods like a birthing pool, TENS machine, pethidine, or even an epidural for extra support.

What Are the Side Effects?
Gas & Air doesn’t cross the placenta, meaning it has no known effects on your baby. However, you might experience dizziness, nausea, voice changes, laughter (yes, it can make you giggle!), dry mouth, or tingling fingers. The good news is these side effects wear off quickly once you stop using it and breathe fresh air between contractions.

Top Tips for Using Gas & Air Effectively
✔️ Start inhaling as soon as you feel a contraction begin, it takes about 20 seconds to work, so timing is key to getting the full benefit.
✔️ Breathe deeply and steadily slow, controlled breathing helps make Gas & Air more effective. Your midwife can guide you through the first few contractions.
✔️ Stay as relaxed as possible, it’s natural to clench your jaw or hands, but this can make contractions feel stronger. Remember the phrase: "Relax your jaw to release your pelvis."
✔️ Use it only during contractions, using it too much in between may make you feel overly drowsy or reduce its effectiveness.
✔️ Stay hydrated, Gas & Air can cause a dry mouth, so keep a bottle of water with a straw nearby and don’t forget lip balm!
✔️ Keep moving! You can use Gas & Air in different positions, on all fours, leaning on a birth partner, or even in the birthing pool. Movement helps labour progress and keeps you more comfortable.

Gas & Air is a fantastic tool to have available, but you might find you don’t need it as much as you expect! Have you used Gas & Air during labour? Or are you thinking about trying it? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! ⬇️💬
