Throwback Thursday: Auburn Street

Did you know there was once an Auburn Street on Donegall Pass?
It sat in between Elm St and Vernon St.

The Housing Executive led the large scale redevelopment of the Donegall Pass area during the 1970s and 80s.
The area had been facing population decline as residents moved out into Belfast's suburbs. The 2 up, 2 down Victorian houses were in need of modernisation to adapt to modern indoor plumbing.

Other streets which disappeared during the redevelopment of the area include; Beech St, Spruce St, Outram St, Lake St, Ormeau st ... and this is only covering the Vernon St side of Donegall Pass.

Did you once live on one of these redeveloped streets? Where did you move to? Does anyone have any memories of Auburn Street?
If you have any information, reach out to us. We would love to hear from you.

Yayoi Kusama Pumpkins

This morning we facilitated a relaxing creative session for South Belfast Sure Start on Donegall Pass. The group enjoyed creating their Yayoi Kusama inspired pumpkin artworks and using lots of colour.

Yayoi Kusama was a Japanese artist famed for her use of colour and DOTS!

We think the group did a fantastic job and produced amazing artworks!

Throwback Thursday: Passnot Chip shop

The Passnot, was situated on Donegall pass where it meets Charlottle St – where the bookies is currently. The chip shop closed its doors in the 1970s.

The Passnot had a bookies to its left, which historically had been a sweet shop and is now the Chinese bakery.

The Pass-not Supper Saloon is first mentioned in the street directory in 1932.

Does anyone have fond memories of the Pass-not? What was your order? Do you remember the price of a chip?

Throwback Thursday: Donegall Pass Tram

The Belfast Corporation bought over the horse drawn tram system and oversaw the transition to an electric system in 1905.
The network was expanded beyond the city centre to Donegall Road, Botanic Avenue, Stranmillis Road, Ligoniel, Castlereagh Road and Bloomfield Road, followed later by Stormont, Killeen Avenue, Dundonald and Ballygomartin. At its height, Belfast Corporation’s tramway system extended to some 51.5 miles across the city.
In the 1920s the privately-run bus services that provided competition for the trams were acquired by the Corporation – giving the city complete control of public transport.
In 1938 the Corporation introduced trolleybuses. The move was so successful that just over ten months later, the decision was made to begin phasing out the tramways, although plans were put on hold with the outbreak of the Second World War the following year.
The combination of buses, trolleybuses and electric trams continued for a number of years, with the last tram reaching its terminus on 28th February 1953.

The tram way itself did not service Donegall Pass, but you could easily access it from either end of the Pass.

Did anyone have grandparents or great grandparents who were tram drivers? Does anyone have any memories of the Belfast tram system?
