Just PASSing Through: Donegall Pass Walking Tour Report (Part 2)

Last year we were supported by Belfast City Council to create a tourism product through the Neighbourhood Tourism Investment Programme. We worked with local residents to create a walking tour that captured the stories of Donegall Pass from the Earl of Donegall and his 'Pass' through Cromac Wood to present day.

Throughout the project, we gathered information on how visitors experienced the tour, so we could continually improve. Here is a summary of that information.

We are delighted to have been awarded Belfast Stories Community Grant!

'The Pass: Root, Branch & Beacon' is about celebrating the people, memories and stories of Donegall Pass.

We’ll bring together people from across the community to share their experiences, including long-standing residents, the Chinese community on Donegall Pass, newer communities, and people connected to the former police station.

Through storytelling, interviews and community events, we’ll create a lasting digital archive and heritage trail.

Together, we’ll remember the past, celebrate our community and help shape the future of Donegall Pass.

🌞 Witness a once-in-a-century celestial event!

On Wednesday 12 August, Northern Ireland will experience an incredible 93% partial solar eclipse – the best eclipse coverage we'll see for the next 100 years.

Join the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen's University Belfast on the front lawn of the Lanyon Building from 6:00pm to 8:30pm for a free public viewing event. Free eclipse glasses will be provided, along with expert guidance on viewing the eclipse safely.

📅 Eclipse begins: ~6:10pm
🌑 Maximum eclipse: Shortly after 7:00pm
☀️ Ends: Shortly after 8:00pm

⚠️ Never look directly at the Sun without proper eclipse glasses.

Did you know that Mary Ann McCracken lived on Donegall Pass?

Mary Ann McCracken lived from 1770 - 1866 and is famous for her social activism and campaigning work. She fought for women’s rights, the end of slavery and championed Belfast’s poor.

Today we took a trip down to Clifton House to learn more about Mary Ann and experience Clifton House’s self-guided tour ‘Mary Ann’s Poor House Tales’.
Her uncles, Henry and Robert Joy, were members of the Belfast Charitable Trust which built the Poor House and they were also responsible for designing the building.
She first visited the Poor House at aged 6. She went on to set up a nursery school and apprenticeship programme within the building to help teach women and children skills to help them escape poverty.
