There is a new campaign highlighting male survivors of domestic abuse.

But a campaign cannot erase years of neglect.

Here is what “support” can look like in practice...

How deeply traumatised does a man have to be before he walks into a police station to report abuse by his own wife?

And what happens when he finally finds the courage to do it?

He is advised NOT to report it.

“Go home.”
“Relax.”
“She will calm down.”
“Save your marriage.”

Then the story can be flipped:

“We offered help, but the victim decided not to make a statement.”

Except the victim did not simply decide against reporting it. He was discouraged from making the statement in the first place.

Case closed.

We do not need another publicity campaign. We need real action, accountability and equal treatment of male victims.

On Sunday 23 August we are holding The Purple Ride Out, a special charity motorbike run raising funds and awareness for Nexus NI and MAP NI — two vital local services supporting men, women, children and unborn babies affected by domestic abuse right here in Northern Ireland.

We originally planned this ride to remember 45 lives lost to domestic abuse since 2020, but sadly that number has risen to 48 in just the last few weeks. It is a heartbreaking reminder of how urgent this issue is, and why we are coming together to stand in solidarity with survivors.

💜Sign‑in: From 9:00am
💜Depart: 10:00am sharp
💜Start Point: McDonald’s, Sprucefield, Lisburn
💜Finish Point: Donaghadee Harbour Park & Gardens
💜Registration: Online registration is now open — visit Co. Down Marshalls page to sign up
💜Donations: Suggested £10 per bike, £5 per pillion; Purple T‑shirts/Hi‑Viz available for minimum £15 donation
💜All funds raised go directly to Nexus NI & MAP NI — we are 100% volunteer run with no costs taken out.

We are expecting a great turnout, with hundreds of riders all wearing purple — creating a moving sea of purple across our roads to show that no one suffers in silence.

THE SENTENCE THAT NEVER ENDS

In many countries, the press normally cannot publish the name or image of someone facing criminal proceedings without consent or special authorisation.

The principle is simple: an accusation is not a conviction.

In the UK, the media can usually publish a defendant’s name, age, partial address and photograph before guilt has been finally determined.

That person may later be acquitted. They may successfully appeal. They may serve their sentence and try to rebuild their life.

But the headlines, photographs and search results remain forever.

A court judgment can be appealed. Trial by media cannot.

Public protection matters. Open justice matters. But public shaming disguised as public interest is not justice.

A sentence should end when the sentence ends. It should not continue forever through newspaper archives and internet searches.
