Stephanie donated a kidney through the UK Living Kidney Sharing Scheme, that enabled her brother in law Tyrone to receive a life-changing kidney transplant.

‘💪Team Transplant swapped their uniforms for hiking boots as they took to the hills to represent Nikpa and ‘Paint the Peaks Pink’ in support of Organ Donation Week.

Your efforts are a wonderful reminder of the commitment and teamwork that sit at the heart of transplantation. Although we know that most people support organ donation in principle, too many have not yet confirmed their organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register.
Many assume they do not need to act because of the opt-out system, or they simply put the decision off for another day, or just avoid thinking about the subject altogether.
As a result, their support in principle does not always translate into action.
This year, Organ Donation Week is focused on encouraging people to take action, not just raising awareness.
The campaign is built around a simple notion: most people would accept a transplant if it could save their life or the life of someone they love.
We want people to reflect on that and ask themselves: "If I would accept an organ, have I made my own decision about donation clear?"
Alongside this, the campaign also highlights the consequences of inaction: every year, opportunities to save lives are lost because people have not recorded their decision and potential donations do not go ahead.
We need to create a sense of urgency and encourage people to act now rather than leaving the decision or conversation for another day.

In June 2023, the law around organ donation in Northern Ireland changed to an opt-out system. This means in the event that organ donation is a possibility after you die, it will be considered that all adults agree to being considered as an organ donor unless they choose to opt out or are in an excluded group. The best way to opt out is by registering a decision not to donate on the NHS Organ Donor Register and by letting loved ones know. Even with the change in law, the need for family conversation and awareness of each other’s decision remains vital, as families will continue to be involved before organ donation goes ahead.
