Where does my money go ?

With the donation boxes being out the wild now and doing incredible I’m sure there’s a few out there wondering what we do with the funds raised…

Currently we have teamed up with B Positive to add our journal notebooks in their cases that are given to every family when they arrive onto the ward.

We are also helping the ward by supplying them with some personal care essentials for the children and also some medical items that unfortunately they are unable to get. Both were used for Grace, so we understand the requirements and need for the other children on the ward.

Then as you all have seen recently we are doing a yearly birthday appeal for Grace, this is to gather gifts for the children on the ward…
* Lego - these sets are aged from 1-18yrs old and allows all the children/teenagers on the ward to pass the time in while also creating a good memory. Medically it also gives the staff and parents a marker on their child’s fine motor skills, concentration and ability to complete a task - this is something we didn’t know until one of the consultants had said to us while Grace built many Lego kits
* Jellycats - we all know of a child/teenager who has a jellycat or two, they are extremely popular for all ages and very cute. They are a very soft snuggly toy/teddy and perfect for those times on the ward when things become too much, to cuddle while they go under anaesthetic, get any sort of difficult interventions done such as bloods/dressing changes/line access etc or even just for those sleepless nights - Grace has a few, with a very special one that she cuddled in bed with every night.

We also have a few other ideas ongoing in the background, and there’s definitely going to be more to come 🌈

Targeted Therapies

Targeted therapies are a newer type of cancer treatment, with many new drugs being developed and trialled. These drugs target and aim to block the gene or protein that cancer cells carry, affecting the growth rate and blood supply to the tumour/s.

Your consultant will advise on whether this is an option or suitable to your child.

Chicken Pox & Measles

Chicken pox/shingles and measles are both dangerous for families with a cancer diagnosis due to their immune system being affected with treatment.

* Chicken pox is infectious from 2 days before onset of spots until last crop of spots is crusted over. Incubation period usually 10-21 days
* A significant contact is classed as five minutes of conversation with an infected person or being in the same room for 15 minutes.

A swab test is typically done to provide results for any infection, if positive you may be admitted for a few days with antibiotics.

If you or your child has been in contact with either, please contact your ward/medical team immediately for further advice.

🎁 Grace’s Birthday - Lego & Jellycat Appeal 🎁

Grace’s birthday is coming soon and we want to mark this occasion not by sadness but by how Grace was always so kind and thinking about other people regardless of what she was going through herself. We got thinking “what would she like” and “what would she want us to do” to mark her birthday

That quickly turned into - well everyone knows how much she loves doing Lego and collecting Jellycat soft toys…

So this year and every year going forward to honour her birthday we are going to do this appeal for these two brands of gifts as not only are they her favourites but they cover a wide age range for other children and teenagers.

As they are being donated to immune comprised children and teens they need to be brand new with labels attached or boxed, if you would rather make a donation you can do so via the fundraising link in our bio

Writing ✍️

Before Grace took ill and was diagnosed I would of never have wrote, nevermind keeping a daily journal but I found that doing this helped. Helped in many ways whether it was to clear my head after a bad day or to keep track of what happened if I ever needed to go back on anything and I suppose to write her story, the memories and all that comes with that.

Now I dunno if I’ll ever go back and re-read the books or just keep them safe knowing what’s in them - the trauma, the pain, the fun, the love, the laughter

But the writing made it easier, to somewhat understand, to forgive, to live, to focus on what is important in life and to never lose that hope

Bereaved Mothers Day,

An open letter to all the mums who carry their children in their hearts everyday…
