MACS Supporting Children & Young People

MACS Supporting Children & Young People Our Vision is to End Youth Homelessness in Northern Ireland Our core services are Supported Housing, Floating Support and Wellbeing.

We provide a range of support services for children and young people aged 16-25 years who haven’t had a fair deal. They may be experiencing a range of issues including:
- homelessness or at risk of homelessness
- substance abuse
- mental health difficulties
- anti-social behaviour
- leaving care
- self-harm and/or suicidal thoughts
- marginalised and at risk

We also work in the areas of highest d

eprivation across Belfast, Lisburn Newry and Downpatrick(based on national deprivation indicators for Northern Ireland). In 2019-20, we worked with almost 1000 young people, helping them improve outcomes in at least one or all of the above issues.

"It was like a detox for body and mind." - Young people from across our supported housing and floating support services recently came together for an overnight residential at in the Mourne Mountains.

From wall climbing and archery to water sports and team challenges, the trip gave young people the chance to try new things and spend time together. One young person described the experience as "a detox for body and mind", while another said it felt like a "big family holiday".

We are grateful to everyone who supports MACS and helps make opportunities like this possible for the young people we work with.

People across Northern Ireland are already taking the plunge this June to support young people facing homelessness.

Our 'Take the Plunge' challenge encourages participants to complete 8 dips throughout the month, highlighting the fact that around 1 in 8 people presenting as homeless, or recorded as legally homeless, are aged between 16 and 25.

Whether it's a sea swim, or ice bath in the garden, people are getting involved in their own way while raising vital funds for MACS.

Every pound raised helps us continue supporting young people towards safety, stability and brighter futures.

There's still plenty of time to get involved. Take on the challenge yourself, with friends, family or colleagues, and make a difference this June.

We are delighted to share that Upstream UK has won the Homeless Link Excellence Award for Successful Partnerships.

Upstream UK is a four-nation partnership delivered by Llamau , Centrepoint , The Rock Trust and MACS, working together to prevent youth homelessness through early identification and intervention.

This award recognises the power of partnership working and the impact of supporting young people and families before challenges escalate into crisis.

Trina Harpur, Head of Floating and Outreach at MACS, said:

"Winning this award is a huge honour and recognition of what can be achieved when organisations work together with a common purpose. Upstream is demonstrating that by identifying challenges early and providing the right support at the right time, we can prevent many young people from ever reaching crisis point. We are proud that Northern Ireland has played a role in demonstrating how prevention can transform lives and help young people build brighter, more secure futures."

Congratulations to all our partners on this fantastic achievement. Read more over on our website - https://shorturl.at/BBS6g

This week, we celebrated Volunteers' Week with a special thank you event at Streamvale Farm for our volunteers.

We are incredibly grateful for their time, dedication and support, which make a real difference to the young people we work with.

Volunteers play a vital role in helping us work towards our vision of an end to youth homelessness in Northern Ireland. We are also excited to be transforming our volunteer service and look forward to sharing more about our new Volunteer Strategy soon.

Thank you to every volunteer who supports MACS.

As we celebrate Volunteers Week, we are shining a light on the people who give their time, skills and experience to support MACS.

Our voluntary Board Members play a vital role in helping shape the future of MACS, ensuring we can continue supporting young people to leave homelessness behind and build positive futures.

We are currently seeking new members to join and are particularly keen to hear from people with expertise in Finance, Property Management or Social Care, although applications from all backgrounds are welcome.

Take the Plunge this June to help end youth homelessness in Northern Ireland.

Around 1 in 8 people presenting as homeless, or recorded as legally homeless, are aged between 16 and 25. That's why we are inviting our supporters to take the plunge 8 times throughout June in aid of MACS.

Every dip helps support young people facing homelessness here in Northern Ireland.
