Where do gifts in Wills go?

The answer is simple: they go wherever people want to make a difference.

In 2025, charitable gifts in Wills supported a wide range of causes, including:

đź’™ Health
đź’™ Faith based causes
đź’™ Animal welfare
đź’™ Children and young people
đź’™ Disability support
đź’™ Development and international aid
đź’™ Conservation and environmental protection
đź’™ Armed Forces charities
đź’™ Many other community causes

Every gift reflects something that mattered deeply to the person who left it.

That's the strength of legacy giving, it allows people to continue supporting the causes they care about long into the future.

Did you know there are different ways to leave a gift in your Will?

Legal language can sometimes feel overwhelming, so here’s a simple guide to some of the most common types of gifts people choose to leave:

• Pecuniary gift: a fixed amount of money
Example: “I leave £5,000 to a charity.”

• Specific gift: a particular item
This could be jewellery, property, shares or another treasured possession.

• Demonstrative gift: money from a specific source
Example: “I leave £10,000 from my savings account.”

• Residuary gift: a share of what’s left in an estate
This is what remains after debts, costs, and other gifts have been paid.

Every gift, no matter the size, can help create a lasting impact for the causes people care about most.

At Will to Give, we believe understanding your options makes legacy giving more accessible for everyone.

What is a pecuniary gift?

It’s the most common type of charitable gift left in a Will: a fixed amount of money given to a cause someone cares about.

In 2025, 51% of all charitable gifts in Wills recorded through the Will to Give Wills Notification Service were pecuniary gifts.

Whether large or small, these gifts help charities continue their vital work and create lasting impact for future generations.

Every gift matters.
Every legacy tells a story.

Leaving 10% or more of an estate to charity may reduce the rate of Inheritance Tax from 40% to 36%.

It’s a simple way to support the causes you care about and reduce the tax on your estate at the same time.

Even a small percentage can make a big difference to your loved ones and charity.

Always speak to a qualified solicitor or advisor when considering your options.
