Access Sport Launch Landmark Initiative to Put Young People at the Heart of Community Sport

Thanks to National Lottery players, Access Sport will receive more than £3.5 million of life-changing funding over six years from The National Lottery Community Fund.

The initiative will join forces with Disability Sport Wales, Scottish Disability Sport and Disability Sport NI to launch ‘From Sideline to Centre’ - a UK-wide initiative that will transform how sports clubs engage, empower, and support young people to become leaders in community sport.

“Young people know what works for them. This project gives us the chance not only to participate in sport but to help shape it.” – Wes Newman, National Youth Board

By 2032, the programme aims to:

➡️Empower 8,000 young leaders
➡️Transform 500 community clubs
➡️Support 80,000 young people across the UK

Together, we’re working across all four nations to build a more inclusive sporting system where young people are leaders, decision-makers and changemakers.

Newry Wheelchair Basketball Summer Scheme 🏀

Disability Sport NI and Newry Mavericks are hosting a Wheelchair Basketball Summer Camp for children and young people up to ages 18 years old. The camp is open new and experienced players and participants are welcome to bring siblings and friends.

A great opportunity to make new friends and have a week of fun!

Venue: Newry Leisure Centre
Dates: Monday 17th August to Friday 21st August
Time: 12pm to 2pm each day
Cost: £30 per child

Inclusive Club Award 2025/26 Nominations Open! 🗳

Disability Sport NI’s Inclusive Club Award is a fantastic opportunity to recognise and celebrate sports clubs that positively include disabled people in the club environment. Nominations are open to both mainstream and disability sports clubs who have made noteworthy improvements or introduced innovative programmes to include disabled people between April 2025 – March 2026.

Funding Opportunity - Sport NI Creating Opportunities Programme

Sport NI's National Lottery funded Creating Opportunities Programme offers up to £5,000 in match funding to support projects delivered by sports clubs, community groups, charities and PTAs.

To help potential applicants find out more, Sport NI are hosting a number of online lunchtime drop-in sessions:

Wednesday 12 August | 1:00pm-2:00pm
Tuesday 18 August | 1:00pm-2:00pm
Tuesday 25 August | 1:00pm-2:00pm

The sessions will cover the programme, eligibility criteria and application process, and provide an opportunity for attendees to ask questions.

Cedar Foundation Summer Carnival at Ormeau Park 🎪

The biggest, boldest and most fun community event that Cedar Foundation has ever put on.

There will be live music, carnival stalls, a country market, a kids’ zone, and a Cedar Story Trail. At the centre of it all will be It’s a Cedar Knockout!, a fun fundraising competition, alongside an entertainment stage filled with music and song.

🏀 Cmon Play!: Relaunched campaign sets out to get more players on court

Disability Sport NI has launched the next phase of our CMON PLAY campaign to grow wheelchair basketball across Northern Ireland and open the sport up to more juniors and adults trying it for the first time.

Wheelchair basketball is one of the most inclusive sports for athletes with physical impairments and with more clubs locally and stronger pathways at every level, it is now more accessible than ever.

We want to make it easier for people to help promote wheelchair basketball and signpost participants towards opportunities. New campaign posters and our updated video are available and we are hoping to engage with settings across NI to display these in schools, health clinics, leisure facilities, community centres and sports clubs.

To support the launch we caught up with our NI Academy squad as they prepared to head off to this weekend's Home Nations Cup in Nottingham. The Home Nations Cup is an international competition which sees England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales compete for the title, with the Celtic Cup awarded to the highest-placed Celtic nation.
