Lady Mary Peters sends a good luck message to Team NI competitors in Glasgow saying:

“I’m incredibly excited for our local athletes who have travelled across to Glasgow and are competing in this summer’s Commonwealth Games. Many of our team members are seasoned Commonwealth and Olympic athletes and for others it’s their first multi-sport style event at this level.

“Each person has worked hard to earn their place on the team, and I know they will give their very best individually or as part of a team. As well as aiming to deliver personal bests, the Games is an opportunity to make new friends, learn from your rivals and come away stronger and wiser and ready for the next challenge.

“I still have very fond memories of my first Commonwealth Games in 1958. They took place in Cardiff, and it was an amazing experience where I met so many different competitors from all over the world. Since then, I’ve been to 16 Commonwealths, five as a competitor and the remainder as a patron, supporter and spectator.

“As founder of the Mary Peters Trust, which has been helping young and talented athletes for over 50 years, I’m particularly thrilled and proud to say that 80% of Team NI have been funded by my Trust.

“I’ll be watching as many Team NI competitors as possible in Glasgow. I’m really looking forward to following everyone’s progress and cheering them on. I’m so proud of the whole team – they are wonderful ambassadors for our wee part of the world.”
