A report from Belfast-based human rights activist Sipho Sibanda captures the experiences of 20 young migrants from Poland, Somalia, Sudan, Zimbabwe and Mauritius exploring their sense of belonging in Northern Ireland.

The report sheds light on racism experienced by children of migrant families and calls for more determined action from government and society to address the issue.

From navigating relationships with institutions to questions of belonging, these young people offer important perspectives on what it means to call Northern Ireland home.

Our warmest congratulations to our colleague and friend Avila Kilmurray, who has been elected to membership of the Royal Irish Academy - the highest academic honour in Ireland - in recognition of her contribution to Humanities and Social Sciences.

Avila’s remarkable career spans activism in the women’s and community movements, philanthropy, peacebuilding, and her role as a founder member of the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition and participant in the Good Friday Agreement talks. So richly deserved. 👏

We’re delighted to be welcoming back – a civil rights activist and leading expert on authoritarianism in the US.

This visit builds on Eric’s trip in December, when he spent time meeting with activists, community groups, funders and policymakers across Northern Ireland and Ireland. This time around, his focus is on sharing the learnings from that visit and reflecting on the latest trends in how the US is responding to hate and the rise of authoritarianism.

During his time here, Eric met with civil society organisations including STEP– hearing firsthand about the lives of migrant communities and the work they do – and spent time with SCI’s Black Leadership Group, talking with local activists from Black and immigrant communities about their experiences of countering hate. He also delivered a session to a wider group of civil society leaders, drawing on lessons from America about resisting authoritarianism and building long-term resilience.

Today, Eric joined for an interview on ’s Talkback, where he spoke about the roots of polarisation, the relationship between white nationalism and antisemitism, and the dismantling of civil rights legislation under the Trump administration – well worth a listen if you missed it. 📻

We’re grateful to Eric for spending time with us and with so many organisations doing this work on the ground.

Last Friday we welcomed the folks from the Migrant Democracy Project for a meeting with members of our Black Leadership Initiative.

The conversation explored the importance of voting, migrant representation in politics and campaigning for the right to vote for migrants currently excluded from the political process.

A great opportunity to build on recent discussions about political structures in NI and the UK and to deepen our understanding of migrant political inclusion.

Last weekend we welcomed the new cohort of our Black Activist Leadership Initiative for their first residential.

During the weekend, new participants had the chance to meet each other and kick-start their journey of empowerment and collective leadership. They had the opportunity to hear from Dessie Donnelly from the Rabble Cooperative on insights into the far right, Gráinne Walsh from Connect Public Affairs on navigating decision-makers in Northern Ireland, Patrick Corrigan from Amnesty International UK on approaches to activism and SCI's associate, Eleanor Gill, on using mentoring to support their work.

The programme is designed for and by the activists themselves - it will be shaped following their own needs, ideas, and priorities as they continue to build their leadership and strengthen their work.

We're proud to support this incredible cohort of changemakers. 👏
