Today - World Rotary Day - is a time to reflect on the remarkable achievements of Rotarians and acknowledge Rotary's relentless commitment to promoting peace and doing good in local communities and throughout the globe. Since its founding by Paul Harris in Chicago in 1905, Rotarians have made a remarkable impact globally by nearly eradicating polio, training peacebuilders, supporting education for millions and most recently championing protecting the environment. Every single day, our network of 1.4 million changemakers across the globe is transforming lives, bringing people together, and making a difference in our communities.

Past President Ivan McMinn in his well-received passionate address 22 September covered Pancreatic Cancer, the Charity NIPAC and an exciting new treatment being developed. He particularly stressed it is essential that everyone familiarises themselves with the symptoms for if people understand the symptoms and catch the disease early the chances of surviving it improve greatly; symptoms are vague but if you get 2 or 3 together go and see your doctor.

Bob Grundy, Director of Innovation and Partnerships at Catalyst, in his well-received address to the club Monday 13 October noted his role in Catalyst is to drive innovation partnerships which they can support on their innovation journey, highlighted it offers all the essential resources across their 3 sites that innovators and entrepreneurs require to elevate their ambitions and achieve success more rapidly and are looking to see if they can bring the innovation process to society’s most pressing complex problems of homelessness and housing.

Nearly There...
Today is World Polio Day when every year Rotary highlights its commitment to ending one of humanity’s longest-running public health efforts by eradicating polio - once and for all. This year it comes at a pivotal moment with shifting geopolitical realities and significant cuts in global health funding. On this World Polio Day Rotary:
- celebrates what has been achieved – since Rotary pioneered the global fight to end polio in 1985, cases have fallen by 99.9%, saving more than 20 million children from paralysis, and it is endemic now in only 2 countries
- honours the tireless contributions of those on the frontlines in the fight to eradicate polio from every corner of the globe and
- recommits to what remains to be done - to ensure that every child, everywhere, grows up free from polio. It is within reach.
Any donations to End Polio Now are matched 2-to-1 by the Gates Foundation.

President Heather was delighted to welcome Guest Speaker Adam Linton to speak to the Club meeting Monday 08 September. His detailed address covered his approach to peace and reconciliation and how the Seeds of Hope programme in Corrymeela, which he had commenced with great scepticism, had transformed him, given him a changed perspective and since then his work in life, personal and in business, is dedicated to collaborating with others to find new spaces for transformation.

The Club is honoured to have been named as a 1 of only 3 ShelterBox Gold Partner Rotary Clubs in GB & Ireland, having raised a total of £6,600 in the Rotary year July 2024-June 2025.

ShelterBox are hugely grateful for the support of Rotary. Their Chief Executive, Sanj Srikanthan, notes: "ShelterBox have been providing emergency shelter to families in extreme need and the 25 years of a remarkable relationship with Rotary has made all of this possible. With 120 million people forced to flee their homes due to conflict and extreme weather, a number which has tripled since our founding 25 years ago, the need for our vital work has never been greater. Amidst the challenges, there is a profound sense of pride in what we have achieved. Since our inception through the work and passion of a small group of Rotarians, we have supported over 3 million people recovering from disaster or conflict. Together, we have brought hope and relief to countless families, and we look forward to continuing this essential work in the years to come."

The Club was delighted to support the Hillsborough Castle and Gardens Running Festival, held on Sunday 27 July in support of Northern Ireland Hospice and thanks are extended to our volunteers (pictured from right) President Heather Shiell, Rotarian Chris Warnock, Past President Marnette Lyons and President JCI Belfast and Friend of The RC Belfast, Teddy Pop.

All enjoyed being kept busy at the gel station handing out sachets to the runners, especially as, luckily, the weather was clement!
