The Start360 YES service in Ballymena was delighted to work with Cullybackey College to deliver Peer Mentor training to Year 13 pupils. The pupils have volunteered to take on the important role of Peer Mentors to support newly arrived Year 8 pupils. The training covered friendship, being a Peer Mentor, Issues affecting young people, signs someone is struggling, how to ask if someone is ok and looking after health & wellbeing. There was fantastic participation from the pupils, who shared their experience and knowledge as young people to support everyone’s learning. The YES team wish all the Peer Mentors the very best as they carry out their roles over the coming year.

Over the past year, our Youth Engagement Service (YES) provided 729 1-1 engagements with young people, offering information and support around personal health and wellbeing.
YES provides a consistent, accessible space where young people can talk, be heard, get practical information and connect with further support when they need it. That includes conversations around emotional wellbeing, substance use and the other challenges young people may be facing.

Start360 was honoured to attend the “Open Minds Youth Wellbeing Event” held at the Melvin Sports Complex in Straban. The event was organised under the Rory Carlin Memorial Fund in partnership with the Koram Centre, Strabane & District Caring Services and the Neighbourhood Health Improvement Project. Its Core purpose was to show young people that it is ok to talk about emotional struggles, addiction and mental illness thereby fostering an environment where seeking help is normalised.
