NIAAS Manager Stanley Booth and NIAAS Co‑ordinator Carolyn Hall recently had the opportunity to meet Dame Siobhan Keegan, Lady Chief Justice, at the Mothers in the Justice System Conference held at the Stormont Hotel, Belfast on Wednesday 27th May 2026.

The conference brought together a range of distinguished speakers to highlight the impact on children when a mother is taken into custody or serving a prison sentence. It emphasised the urgent need for trauma‑informed, gender‑responsive policies that recognise and address the effects on families.

The opening address was delivered by Naomi Long, Minister of Justice, followed by insightful contributions from Jacqui Durkin (Chief Inspector, Criminal Justice Inspectorate Northern Ireland), Dr Shona Minson, and Dame Siobhan Keegan.
Across all presentations, a clear message emerged: the justice system must better recognise the profound trauma experienced by children separated from their mothers and take meaningful steps to minimise this harm.

We were delighted to hear Dame Keegan speak and to engage with her afterwards. We were particularly encouraged by her understanding of the Appropriate Adult role and her awareness of the complex mental health issues often encountered in this work.

For more information, please see Supporting Change: A strategy for women and girls in or at risk of contact with the justice system:
