Shankill Area Social History (SASH Group) Shankill Area Social History
We hope to Record, Compile, Archive & Educate Ourselves & Others. When or if they do, we will rectify them as soon as possible.

Facebook is only one strand of what Shankill Area Social History, S.A.S.H, is trying to build. It shows the photos that people have given us relating to the Shankill Road. Some are given with the, where & who details, however most are not. So it will be up to those who look at them to tag & tell where they are taken, when possible. S.A.S.H also gives recognition to the person that donates them; th

is is done because we have been approached in the past & asked how & from who we got photos’. We have a constitution & are a recognised group, & therefore do not want to leave ourselves open, legally, morally or otherwise. IF ANYONE SEES SOMETHING THAT OFFENDS THEM OR OTHERS, PLEASE INFORM US RIGHT AWAY. Another strand, a site will eventually hold the personal photos of individual families, that do not wish to have their stuff within Facebook, Youtube, Vimeo, Flker etc, & that is alright. When we meet the people that we interview & get material from, we then have them sign a consent form, this helps keep everything above board for S.A.S.H. We have also recorded video interviews where people are happy to have them put on the site; others though do not, so we listen to the recorded interview & write a short life story on them & upload that with a photo. Shankill Area Social History is a non-funded group of volunteers, made up from a wide range of people. Looking after all the sites is done voluntarily & therefore mistakes may happen. S.A.S.H is open to anyone that wants to join. So if you feel that you have any skill, be it working a Facebook account or helping to do the research, help put on events or just simply wish to come & listen to some guest speakers we have in on a regular basis, please come. All are welcome. Shankill Area Social History. S.A.S.H

Today SASH reps attended the annual Polish Independence Day service at Miltown Cemetery. This service organised by the Belfast Polish community honours their countrymen in the Polish Air Force who gave their lives fighting with the Allied forces against N**i forces in WW2. Thanks to our friend Paweł Romańczuk who invites us each year.

Shankill Remembers.

Today SASH had the greatest of pleasures to once again pay homage to Our Glorious Dead by placing wreaths around the Military Graves within the Shankill Grave Yard, Woodvale Park Memorial & Shankill Road Memorial Garden on behalf of local Sponsors.

Over 6000 Brave Men marched down the Shankill Road & Off To War.
Over 1500 of these Brave Men never returned.
Over 120 of Died in the 1st Of July 1916 at the opening of the Battle of the Somme.

On top of this many more returned with physical & mental injuries, disabilities that they would carry with them throughout the rest of their lives.

For the Duration of the Great War Our Brave Women had to step forward also, most left with the responsibility of holding their homes together whilst earning enough to get them by.

Then came the after War years, when they had to deal with the burden the War left upon their loved ones, on top of everything else.

Todays wreaths were placed on behalf of the Organisations/Groups listed below, all of which wanting to pay respects to those who went before, to those who made the Ultimate Sacrifice for the Freedom we have today.

1st Shankill Somme Association.
Agnes & Sandy Close.
Alfie McCrory.

We would also ask that you Recognise & Remember those that Served, Fought & Died within many other War’s & Conflict’s throughout our History, because each & every time our Country has Called, our Brave Men & Women have proudly stepped forward, in fact they continue to step forward & remain within the ranks to this very day, quietly & professionally protecting us all as we go through life unaware of that fact.

To Remember Is To Honour.

This week SASH had the privilege to visiting the Ulster Special Constabulary Museum & NACV. Victims Group. The USC Museum is housed in the former Loughgall Police station. Our guide, Ken gave us a very informative and little heard story of the Specials and their role in keeping at bay the terrorist threat since the establishment of Northern Ireland. He also shared his own personal history serving along the border. We then moved to Newry & Armagh Caring for Victims Group based at Bingham House in Markethill. There we saw the memorial wall of the victims of terrorism and the Operation Banner Museum. Our guide Stephen took us through the exhibition timeline of service and sacrifice made by those who served to from two World Wars to our recent terrorist conflict.
Both Museums rely on volunteers and receive no funding so we would encourage all those with interest in hearing the true story to reach out to the groups and visit the Museums.
