Belfast Memory Walk has raised an incredible £67,500+! 💙🎉

Hundreds of walkers turned Ormeau Park blue for the Belfast Memory Walk, with every step aimed at funding vital dementia support and ground-breaking research. Walkers attending the event have raised more than £67,500 so far.

There are currently around a million people living with dementia in the UK, including more than 25,000 people across Northern Ireland. There are also thousands more caring for someone with dementia.

Barry Smyth, Alzheimer’s Society’s Regional Manager for Northern Ireland, said: “Everyone attending our Memory Walk this year will have found it incredibly moving, atmospheric and uplifting – whether they were doing it for the first time or it has become an annual event. By taking part, our incredible supporters are a real force for change and I cannot thank them enough for taking part.

'It will take a society to beat dementia and Memory Walk shows what society in action looks like. Everyone who walks, donates or supports is part of the fight to beat dementia.”

Singing for the Brain - Online! 🎶

As part of our partnership with AIB , Howard Clarke and Claire Harkin (Dementia Advisers Foyle & Strabane) visited their Derry/Londonderry branch last week, supporting customers who required information on dementia. 🤝

Banks play a vital role when someone receives a dementia diagnosis.

Managing banking and finances safely is crucial after a dementia diagnosis, to protect independence while preventing fraud and errors.

Details on some of the services that banks provide are below:

Bank Supports and Safeguards:

• Specialised assistance: Major providers offer dedicated dementia support lines, private branch spaces, and staff training through partnerships with organisations like Alzheimer's Society.
• Account controls: Set up ATM withdrawal limits, block online loan applications, or restrict contactless spending amounts directly in-branch.
• Trusted oversight: Establish third-party authority or joint accounts, to let a caregiver help monitor transactions safely.

Practical Money Management Tips:

• Automate fixed costs: Set up direct debits or standing orders for regular bills like utilities and mortgages to prevent missed payments.
• Reduce cash reliance: Swap heavy reliance on loose cash and PINs for managed cards or lower daily spending limits.
• Monitor statements: Review online or postal statements frequently to catch unusual activity, duplicate charges, or potential scams early.

Legal and Future Planning:

• Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA): Advising customers to arrange an Enduring Power of Attorney early, ensuring a trusted person can legally step in later.

As part of Positive Ageing month we are offering you the opportunity to become a Dementia Friend! 💙

Join us for a free Dementia Friends Session where you'll learn more about dementia, how it affects people, and the small actions that can make a big difference for people living with dementia.

For the McClintock family, dementia is deeply personal. Three sisters, Betty, Jean and Meta, are all living with different forms of dementia.

The McClintock family decided to turn something incredibly difficult into something positive by coming together to raise vital funds and awareness for dementia. What followed was an amazing fundraising effort, bringing together friends, family, local businesses and the wider community.
Through their Coffee Morning, Trek26 Giant's Causeway and the incredible generosity of those around them, the family managed to raise a phenomenal £15,305.60.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated, baked, organised, volunteered, supported and took part! With special thanks to 1st Ballyeaston Presbyterian Church, Eurospar (Doagh), Jacksons Butchers and Bakery and Ross’s Joint Ballyclare for their wonderful support.

This incredible total is a true reflection of the love and community surrounding the McClintock family.
Thank you to the McClintock Family and everyone who helped make it possible! 🙏
