Abuse does not always begin with obvious warning signs.

Sometimes it begins with attention, trust, favours, private contact or a relationship that slowly crosses boundaries.

Our latest blog looks at grooming, coercive control and the red flags that can be difficult to recognise, particularly when harm is hidden within trusted spaces or relationships.

It also explores the role that parents, carers, organisations and communities can play in helping children and young people understand boundaries, recognise unhealthy behaviour and feel confident speaking out when something does not feel right.

As part of our work to support the NI Executive's Ending Violence Against Women and Girls strategy, Relate NI is committed to helping people recognise harmful relationship patterns earlier and build safer, healthier relationships.

Are you a good listener?

Being an effective listener is about more than just hearing what the other person says.

It means being present, focusing on them and not getting distracted (this includes using your phone while ‘listening’), and making a conscious effort to understand the full message…not just the words being said, but the feelings and meaning behind them.

A few small things can make a big difference:

• Give the conversation your full attention
• Try not to plan your reply while the other person is still speaking.
• Show you’re listening through eye contact, nodding or small verbal cues.
• Check your understanding by reflecting back what you’ve heard.
• Avoid interrupting and give the other person space to finish.

When people feel listened to, it can reduce misunderstandings, support healthier communication and strengthen relationships with partners, children, family members, friends and colleagues.

If communication feels difficult in your relationships, Relate NI can help.

Delighted to be invited to contribute as a panel member at Coleraine & Ballycastle Child Contact Centre’s 20-year celebration, professionally hosted by Sarah Travers.

The event was led by Centre Coordinator Emma Mullan, who is also an associate family mediator with Relate NI.

Child Contact Centres across Northern Ireland, funded by the Health Trusts, play an important role in supporting separated parents to spend meaningful time with their children through play, connection and relationship-building. Where additional support is needed, parents may also be referred to Relate NI for mediation or counselling.

Working together helps create better outcomes for children and families. The Centres rely on the commitment of volunteers, with training and support provided. They are particularly keen to hear from more male volunteers who would like to get involved.

These are phrases many of us have grown up hearing. But when harmful behaviours are minimised, dismissed or normalised, it can shape how we experience relationships, boundaries, communication and respect.

Healthy relationships are built on respect, honesty, trust, safety and communication. At Relate NI, our EVAWG programmes support conversations around healthy relationships, respect, boundaries and recognising unhealthy patterns:

Respectful Relationships – a community programme for women aged 16+
Relate-Ed – workshops for schools and young people

Because changing the conversation matters. Find out more about booking by emailing [email protected] or call us on 028 9032 3454.
