Statement from East Belfast Community

The members of the Inner East Forum, the Short Strand Community Forum and the East Belfast Tension Monitoring Group wish to extend our collective solidarity with the victim of last Mondays horrific attack. Our thoughts are with him and his family and we wish him a speedy recovery.

As important as our condemnation of this despicable attack is, the need for us to condemn the widescale violence and hatred aimed at ethnic minority families across the city has overshadowed the seriousness of the incident in Kinnaird Way. The sight of terrified families fleeing their homes because of their ethnicity and racial background is totally unacceptable in 2026 and can have no place in our society and should not be mistaken for protest.

The destruction of public services, the widescale vandalism and the general fear and disruption forced upon communities across the city is also unforgiveable and should also not be mistaken for protest. This episode should bring shame on those in our communities who seek to sow fear and division amongst us and our young people. There can never be an excuse for racism and violence.

People from our migrant communities play an essential part in keeping our city running, playing vital roles in sustaining our healthcare and public services and it is clear that without them, our city would be much poorer and less colourful. We wish to extend our solidarity with our neighbours, to let them know that we appreciate their contributions to our city and that we will continue to support their welcome inclusion in our communities.

The staff members of Oasis Caring in Action are stunned and heart-broken by the passing of our wonderful C.E.O. of former years Stephen Cruise
Stephen was a larger than life member of our team for six years. He rescued the valuable project from certain collapse when he came to us from Ulster Bank.

You never knew the minute when Stephen would un-leash a truck-load of off-beat fun and unusual humour upon us. He ran a tight ship in his role, but peppered our Oasis experience with compassion and showers of unexpected generosity.
Stephen was not shy about calling a spade a spade when (mostly) that was the best thing to do. The funders of our work knew a storm was coming if they weren’t up-to-scratch.
A colourful, creative, compassionate, whirlwind of a man has moved on from our midst. We will sorely miss him. He was assured in his last days that he was bound for a face-to-face encounter with the Lord he loved. It is reasonable to think that heaven has recently opened the door to a force to be reckoned with!
We offer our deeply heartfelt condolences to Karen, Nikki and John.

THIRTY YEARS ago today, Oasis Caring In Action opened it doors in a tiny house on Thorndyke Street!!! We moved to Castlereagh Street in 1999 and then we moved across the road to our current building in May 2018! From day one our focus has been on the many needs of our local community, we have been blessed from the start with a staff team who shared that focus! Thank you to every single person who has walked through our doors over those 30 years!

From the parents who entrusted us with looking after your little ones at our Early Years Department, to everyone who has participated in the 1000's of training sessions we delivered, to every single client our excellent Good Morning Service have called, every person who our amazing Imago team have supported (They also have a BIG birthday coming up....more on that later in the year!) From every family our brilliant Family Support team have visited, to all of the young people who signed up and contributed to any of our past 22 groups (and counting...). Not forgetting the many clients supported in both our past offices in Antrim and Coleraine and by our current Foodbank team in Antrim!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to every member of staff, both past and present and every volunteer to ever give their time, you are all OASIS CARING IN ACTION!

Thank you all of you for playing a part in our lives over the last 30 years! Bring on the next 30!
