Catherine is the Acting Manager for our Physical Disabilities Service in the Isle of Man and has dedicated 12 years to working in care. No two days are the same - but you’ll always find Catherine supporting her team, keeping quality and compliance on track, managing rotas, and ensuring the people we support receive truly person-centred care in a safe, positive environment. And of course, there’s always time for a game of bingo! 🎉

Catherine has been recognised for the incredible impact she’s making within her service. She has championed co-production by personally attending outreach review meetings and helping to organise Thie Quinney’s very first meeting led by the people we support.

The result? A fantastic turnout, brilliant engagement, and a space where everyone felt heard - sharing ideas for fundraising and service improvements. One person even said the meeting left them feeling “buoyant for the day” 💬✨

To celebrate, Catherine was surprised with flowers and chocolates - and Louise, who lives at the service, was just as excited as we were! 🌸🍫

Catherine says:

“Care can be challenging at times, but it can also be one of the most rewarding jobs you can do. It’s incredibly motivating knowing you are truly making a difference to someone’s life.”

Catherine, you’re amazing - we’re lucky to have you! Thank you for everything 💜

For the first time in his life, Chile has a room of his own.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Chile moved to Ireland as a child, growing up in Dublin before later living with his sister and her family in Navan.

When he moved into Swan House last year, he wasn’t in a great place. His health was poor, he was underweight, and in a completely new environment.

Eight months on, things look very different.

Rachel Malone, Team Leader at the Praxis Care service, says:

“He’s doing better physically, but you really notice the change in the everyday moments. He’s more settled, more confident, and starting to do more for himself. Things like managing parts of his medication and his money, which is a big step.”

“These days, his mornings often start quietly, with a cup of coffee in his greenhouse – a space just for him. Gardening has always been his thing, and now he finally has the space to enjoy it properly. Trips to the garden centre are a highlight.”

Rachel adds:

“Having his own room has made a real difference too. He’s naturally quite quiet, but he’s built good relationships here and is getting more involved. He’s joined the Arch Club and Special Olympics. The staff are so proud of him.”

"It hasn’t been one big change - it’s been lots of small ones, over time, that have really added up.”

“That’s what it often looks like - small, everyday progress that really matters.”

And it’s the kind of support that’s been part of Swan House and Meenalig in Navan for the past 20 years.

Join us in celebrating 20 years of Swan House and Meenalig - supporting people, every day, in ways that really matter.

A blood cancer diagnosis at 33 changed everything for Martyna Konecka. What she did next might surprise you.

Martyna is a Personal Assistant at Praxis Care - and after her treatment, she chose to give back by volunteering as a befriender. She explains:

“After I finished my treatment, lots of things changed for me, and I thought it would be nice to give something back. Your priorities change - how you spend your time feels more important than ever. I just wanted to do something that is good for me and for someone else.”

Inspired by someone close to her, Martyna decided to become a befriender with Praxis Care:

“A family member of mine has autism, they are one of the people I’m closest to. They are just the best person on this planet. We always meet up, go window shopping and just talk, and I thought, well that’s exactly what I would be doing volunteering for Praxis Care.

“I remember telling them I was going to become a befriender and they said ‘you’ll be very good at it, you’ve had a lot of practice!’”

Now, Martyna is building a connection with the young person she supports:

“We’ve met a couple of times and it’s going really well. We’re getting to know each other. They love animals and farms, so next time we’re heading to Belfast Zoo.

“We have a laugh. It’s so nice to be there for someone - and I get to visit farms and hold baby chicks too! It’s a bit like having a little sister.”

Martyna’s advice for anyone thinking about befriending:

“Don’t overthink it or worry. Just be yourself, build a relationship, and enjoy it.”

Today marks a bittersweet moment as we bid farewell to Amanda Gray, an exceptional senior leader who has dedicated eight years to Praxis Care.

Amanda joined us as Head of Development, before progressing to Regional Director, and most recently Director of Care and Development for the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain over the past three years. During her time with us, she played a significant role in expanding our services into the West of Ireland, helping us reach and support more individuals, families and communities.

What truly sets Amanda apart is how she shows up for people. She has been a passionate advocate for those we support and for our staff. She is known for her visibility across services - spending time with teams, connecting with families, and building meaningful relationships with the people we support. She leads from the front, and that has made a lasting impact.

Jessica, one of the people we support, shared: “She is very kind and always looked after me in Swan House.”

Luke, another resident, said: “Amanda is a very nice person with a big heart who looks after everyone in Praxis Care.”

These reflections capture the difference Amanda has made to so many.

Amanda, thank you for your leadership, your commitment, and the care you have shown across Praxis Care over the past eight years. You will be greatly missed.

We wish you every success for the future.

Please join us in celebrating Amanda and all she has contributed.

Most of us couldn’t last 5 minutes in these cold waters… Michael’s aiming for 15 hours 🌊

This July, Praxis Care volunteer Michael Magee is taking on one of the toughest challenges in the world, the English Channel, all in support of Praxis Care 💙

And he’s not just taking on the swim… he’s set to become the first person with autism in Europe to complete it.

Michael understands just how important support can be. Living with autism himself, he’s experienced the challenges of feeling misunderstood - and now he’s determined to help others see what’s possible.

“I’m autistic, and growing up, I often felt like no one truly understood me. I want others to see that with the right support, anything is possible.”

👉 If you can, please donate and support Michael’s challenge – every contribution will help Praxis Care continue their vital work across our communities.

“Everyone deserves to have a Joanne in their life”, says Sarah, one of our team members on the Isle of Man.

For the first time, Joanne recently visited Ramsey Queen’s Pier - a place shaped by memory, connection, and a special way to honour loved ones.

Alongside her sisters and Jamie from Ingledene, Joanne spent time walking along the pier to see a plaque placed in memory of her dad.

Joanne said: “Graham… amen… he’s in heaven now.”

There was lots of joy in the day too - watching the little train pass by 🚂, taking in the sea air, and sharing tea and cake together.

These moments perfectly reflect Joanne’s warmth and the joy she brings to those around her.

As Sarah puts it: “She’s genuinely one of the most wonderful people. Everything is a delight with her.”

Meet Rowena Patton - our Employee of the Month for January 🌟

Rowena is a Support Worker, working within our Coleraine Home Response Team. In just a few weeks, Rowena helped transform a person we support’s day-to-day life by rebuilding trust, encouraging independence and supporting positive change through her patience and care.

Colleagues describe her as compassionate, reliable and quietly heroic - always going the extra mile.

For anyone considering a career in care, Rowena’s advice is simple: it’s challenging, but incredibly rewarding when you see the difference you can make in someone’s life.

Thank you, Rowena, for everything you do 💜

We’ve had such a lovely week celebrating our residents living with dementia 💙

There’s been a real buzz around Lisburn, with our team - aka our “angels” - pulling out all the stops to organise a week full of fun, laughter and special moments.

A huge thanks to our brilliant volunteers too, especially the teams from Danske Bank and Power NI, for getting stuck in and helping make it all so memorable.

Dementia Action Week is all about those little moments that really matter, and we’ve definitely made plenty of those this week ✨
