We all have an opinion on the perfect cuppa. Milky, sugary, strong or weak, a simple brew has always got us talking. Now, this research adds another talking point: whether it's worth letting your brew cool a little before taking a sip.

The largest study of its kind in the UK has found that people who reported drinking beverages when they were ‘very hot’ had around three times the risk of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, compared with those who drank them ‘warm’.

In the UK, the risk of developing this type of cancer is relatively low, and more research is needed to understand exactly how the temperature of drinks may affect our risk. The most important proven ways to reduce the risk of this type of oesophageal cancer are not smoking and cutting down on alcohol.

But if you’re concerned, a simple step is to let your cuppa cool before taking a sip ☕
